God made the animals and "saw that it was good" (Genesis 1:25). "Every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills" (Psalm 50:10). Jesus said of sparrows, "not one of them is forgotten before God" (Luke 12:6). And "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast" (Proverbs 12:10).
From the creatures God brought to Adam to be named, to the wolf and the lamb in Isaiah's vision, animals fill the pages of Scripture. The Bible shows that God made them, delights in them, feeds them, and expects people to treat them with care. These twelve King James verses are about God's creatures: their creation, God's care for every sparrow, and our responsibility for the animals in our homes, farms, and shelters. If you love a pet, volunteer at a rescue, or just enjoy the birds outside your window, these verses are for you. For the wider created world, see Bible verses about nature.
God made the animals
1. Genesis 1:24-25
"And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good."
On the sixth day God made cattle, creeping things, and beasts of the earth, each after his kind, and God saw that it was good. Animals are part of the creation God called good.
2. Genesis 2:19
"And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof."
God brought every beast and bird to Adam to see what he would call them. Naming shows a relationship: from the beginning, people were given responsibility for the animals, not ownership without care.
3. Psalms 50:10-11
"For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine."
Every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. God knows every wild creature personally. They belong to Him before they belong to anyone.
4. Job 12:7-10
"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee: and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind."
Ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee. Animals point to their Maker, for in His hand is the soul of every living thing.
God cares for every creature
5. Psalms 36:6
"Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast."
O LORD, thou preservest man and beast. The same God who sustains your life sustains the life of every creature.
6. Psalms 145:9
"The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works."
The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. God's mercy reaches every part of creation, including the animals He made.
7. Matthew 6:26
"Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?"
Behold the fowls of the air: your heavenly Father feedeth them. Jesus used birds to teach His followers not to worry. If God feeds the birds, He will care for you, for you are worth much more.
8. Luke 12:6
"Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God?"
Five sparrows sold for two farthings, among the cheapest food in the market, and not one of them is forgotten before God. Nothing God made is beneath His notice.
Caring for animals, and their future
9. Proverbs 12:10
"A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast: but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel."
A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast. Caring well for animals is a mark of godliness. Feeding, sheltering, giving medical care, and adopting or rescuing animals in need all reflect this verse.
10. Exodus 23:12
"Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed."
God built rest for animals into the Sabbath law: that thine ox and thine ass may rest.
11. Isaiah 11:6
"The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them."
The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and a little child shall lead them. Messiah's kingdom includes peace between animals. Creation's story ends not in predators and prey but in peace.
12. Romans 8:21
"Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God."
The creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption. Paul says all creation groans now but will share in the freedom of God's children. God's redemption reaches the whole creation.
A short prayer
Creator God, thank You for the animals You have made: the birds outside my window, the creatures of field and sea, and the pets we love. Teach me to care for them kindly, and fill me with wonder at Your works. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about animals?
God created the animals and called them good (Genesis 1:24-25), owns and knows them (Psalm 50:10-11), feeds them (Matthew 6:26), and forgets none of them (Luke 12:6). He also calls people to care for them: "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast" (Proverbs 12:10).
Do animals go to heaven according to the Bible?
Scripture does not directly say whether individual pets go to heaven, and Christians hold different views. It does promise that creation itself "shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption" (Romans 8:21) and pictures animals at peace in God's kingdom (Isaiah 11:6). We can trust the God who forgets no sparrow.
What does the Bible say about being kind to animals?
Proverbs 12:10 links righteousness with caring for animals. God gave working animals Sabbath rest (Exodus 23:12) and said, "Thou shalt not muzzle the ox when he treadeth out the corn" (Deuteronomy 25:4). Kindness to animals reflects the kindness of their Creator.
