An easy nativity play script for church or Sunday school
This Christmas play script for church runs about 20 minutes with the carols, or about 10 minutes without them. You need at least 8 children, and there is no upper limit: angels, shepherds, wise men and townspeople can be any number. Ages 4 and up can take part, and the littlest ones can act without lines. Three short rehearsals are enough, because the narrators read from the script and the group parts say one line together.
Every spoken line is King James Version text. Narrators read whole verses. When a verse holds speech, it is split: the narrator reads “And the angel said unto them,” and the angel says the rest, so the pieces join back into the exact verse. A few verses are left out to keep it short, and page 2 lists them.
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.”
The cast
- Narrators 1, 2 and 3: Reads the story from the KJV. One person can read all three parts. (Scenes 1-2 / 3-4 / 5-6)
- Mary: One line (Luke 1:38). On stage from Scene 1 to the end. (1 line)
- Joseph: No lines: listens, wakes, walks, stands guard. (non-speaking)
- Gabriel: Speaks to Mary (Luke 1:28-33). (5 lines)
- Angel of the Lord: Speaks to Joseph and to the shepherds. Can be the same child as Gabriel. (5 lines)
- All Angels: Any number. Say Luke 2:14 together. (1 line, together)
- Shepherds: Two or more. Say Luke 2:15 together. (1 line, together)
- Wise Men: Any number (the Bible does not say how many). Say Matthew 2:2 together. (1 line, together)
- Star Bearer: Carries a star on a stick ahead of the wise men. (non-speaking)
- Townspeople: Optional, any number: travelers on the road to Bethlehem. (non-speaking)
The six scenes of the play
The birth of Jesus Christmas play script follows Luke and Matthew in order, with a carol between the scenes:
- Scene 1: The Angel Visits Mary (Luke 1:26-28, 30-33, 38). Mary sits center stage, sweeping or reading. Gabriel waits at one side and steps in on “And the angel came in unto her.” Carol: O Come, All Ye Faithful, as everyone takes their places (prelude).
- Scene 2: Joseph’s Dream (Matthew 1:20-21, 24). Joseph lies down as if asleep. The Angel of the Lord stands behind him with arms open.
- Scene 3: The Road to Bethlehem (Luke 2:1, 3-7). Mary and Joseph walk the aisle toward the manger. Townspeople cross the stage carrying bundles. Carol: O Little Town of Bethlehem, while Mary and Joseph walk slowly around the room.
- Scene 4: Shepherds in the Field (Luke 2:8-14). Shepherds sit on the floor at one side, as if around a fire. The Angel of the Lord steps up high (a step or a chair). Carol: Angels We Have Heard on High, as the angel choir gathers.
- Scene 5: At the Manger (Luke 2:15-20). The shepherds hurry to the manger. Carol: Away in a Manger, softly, while the shepherds kneel.
- Scene 6: The Wise Men Worship (Matthew 2:1-2, 9-11). The Star Bearer leads the wise men down the aisle. They carry three gift boxes. Carol: We Three Kings, while the wise men walk the aisle behind the star.
- Finale (John 1:14; Luke 2:14). Everyone comes forward and stands around the manger. Carol: Joy to the World, the whole cast and audience sing together.

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.”
Tips for directors
- Costumes from home: bathrobes and towels for shepherds, a blue scarf for Mary, tinsel halos for angels, paper crowns for the wise men.
- Props: a doll in a blanket, a box or basket for the manger, a star on a stick, three gift boxes.
- Group lines: the angels, shepherds and wise men say their lines together, so shy children can join in.
- Stage map: page 2 shows where everyone stands; Mary and Joseph stay by the manger from Scene 3 to the end.
- Carols: the words for each carol are on our lyric pages: O Come, All Ye Faithful · O Little Town of Bethlehem · Angels We Have Heard on High · Away in a Manger · We Three Kings · Joy to the World. Swap in Hark! The Herald Angels Sing or Silent Night if you like.

“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”
