Bible Verses About Strength: 10 Scriptures for When You Feel Weak

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The Bible teaches that real strength comes from God, not from ourselves. Key verses: Isaiah 40:29-31 (He gives power to the faint), Philippians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ"), 2 Corinthians 12:9 (His strength is made perfect in weakness), and Psalm 46:1 (God is our refuge and strength).

Scripture is honest about weakness: tired prophets, outnumbered armies, failing hearts. Again and again it points to a strength that comes from outside us. These ten King James passages are grouped by what they teach.

Strength for the weary

1. Isaiah 40:29-31

"He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint."
Isaiah 40:29-31 (KJV)

Isaiah promises strength to the faint and pictures renewal three ways: soaring like eagles, running without weariness, walking without fainting.

2. Psalms 73:26

"My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."
Psalms 73:26 (KJV)

An honest admission that body and heart can fail, paired with confidence that God remains the strength of the heart forever.

3. Psalms 46:1

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
Psalms 46:1 (KJV)

"A very present help" means help that is near and available now. The psalm goes on to describe the earth shaking while God's people stay secure.

Strength in weakness

4. 2 Corinthians 12:9

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)

Paul asked three times for relief from his "thorn in the flesh." God's answer was not removal but grace, and Paul learned to boast in weakness so Christ's power would rest on him.

5. Philippians 4:13

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
Philippians 4:13 (KJV)

Often quoted before a big game or test. In context (Philippians 4:11-13) Paul is describing contentment in plenty and in need: Christ strengthens him for any circumstance.

6. Isaiah 41:10

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

God answers fear with presence and promise: "I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee."

The Lord is my strength

7. Psalms 28:7

"The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him."
Psalms 28:7 (KJV)

David describes strength and protection together: trust leads to help, and help leads to song.

8. Exodus 15:2

"The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him."
Exodus 15:2 (KJV)

Part of the Song of Moses after crossing the Red Sea, the first song recorded in Scripture.

9. Nehemiah 8:10

"Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
Nehemiah 8:10 (KJV)

Spoken to people weeping as they heard God's law read. Nehemiah tells them to celebrate, because joy in the Lord is their strength.

10. Ephesians 6:10

"Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might."
Ephesians 6:10 (KJV)

Paul's introduction to the "armor of God" (Ephesians 6:10-18). The strength is "in the Lord," not self-generated.

A short prayer

Lord, I feel weak today, and You already know it. Be my strength and my shield. Give me what I need for the next step, and let Your power rest on me where I have none of my own. In Jesus' name, amen.
