Bible Verses About Gentleness: 12 KJV Scriptures on God's Tender Care and a Gentle Spirit

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

In the Bible, gentleness is strength under control, used with care for others. David praised God, saying "thy gentleness hath made me great" (2 Samuel 22:36); Paul appealed "by the meekness and gentleness of Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:1); and the KJV lists gentleness and meekness in the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). A gentle answer is often the strongest one: "a soft tongue breaketh the bone" (Proverbs 25:15).

Gentleness is easy to misunderstand. Some people hear it as weakness, as being a pushover or a doormat. Others think of it as a personality type, something you either have or do not. The Bible presents gentleness as a quality of God Himself, perfectly shown in Jesus, and as fruit the Holy Spirit grows in anyone who follows Him. It is the strength that does not need to crush, the patience that restores rather than shames, the soft answer that turns away wrath. People look up Bible verses about gentleness for a study on the fruit of the Spirit, for parenting, for marriage, or because they have a quick temper and want to change. These twelve King James verses show God's gentleness with us, the gentleness of Christ, and how to grow a gentle spirit. For the whole fruit, see the fruit of the Spirit; for its close cousin, see kindness.

The gentleness of God

1. 2 Samuel 22:36

"Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great."
2 Samuel 22:36 (KJV)

David sang this song after God rescued him from Saul and his enemies (2 Samuel 22:1), and Psalm 18:35 repeats it. The Hebrew word can mean God's humility or condescension: His willingness to stoop down to help. David the warrior king says his greatness did not come from his own strength but from a God gentle enough to bend down to him.

2. Deuteronomy 32:11-12

"As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him."
Deuteronomy 32:11-12 (KJV)

In the Song of Moses, God is pictured as a mother eagle who stirs up the nest when the young need to learn to fly, then spreads her wings to catch them and carry them. God's gentleness is not softness that never lets us grow. It is a careful love that pushes us out of the nest and is always underneath to catch us.

3. 1 Kings 19:5

"And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat."
1 Kings 19:5 (KJV)

After his great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah ran for his life, collapsed under a tree and asked to die (1 Kings 19:4). God did not lecture him. An angel touched him, gave him fresh bread and water, and let him sleep again, then came back a second time "because the journey is too great for thee" (1 Kings 19:7). Sometimes God's gentlest care looks like food and rest.

4. Psalms 25:9

"The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way."
Psalms 25:9 (KJV)

The meek are the humble and teachable, people who know they need direction. God promises to guide them and teach them His way. Gentleness begins with how we receive from God. A heart that is willing to be taught by Him becomes gentle with others who are still learning.

The meekness and gentleness of Christ

5. 2 Corinthians 10:1

"Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you:"
2 Corinthians 10:1 (KJV)

Some in Corinth mocked Paul as bold in his letters but unimpressive in person. Instead of hitting back, he appeals to them by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. The Greek word for gentleness here suggests reasonableness and fairness, not insisting on every right. Paul could have used his authority harshly; he chose to model Jesus.

6. Matthew 12:20

"A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory."
Matthew 12:20 (KJV)

Matthew quotes Isaiah 42 to describe Jesus. A bruised reed is a stalk already bent and cracked; smoking flax is a lamp wick that is barely smouldering. Jesus does not snap people who are already broken or snuff out faith that is barely alive. If your faith feels faint today, He will fan it, not put it out.

7. Luke 13:34

"O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!"
Luke 13:34 (KJV)

Jesus lamented over Jerusalem, the city that would reject Him, and pictured Himself as a mother hen trying to gather her chicks under her wings. Even when people would not, His longing was to protect, not to punish. The image is tender and costly: a hen shields her chicks with her own body. See the love of Jesus.

8. John 21:15

"So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs."
John 21:15 (KJV)

Peter had denied Jesus three times. After the resurrection, Jesus cooked him breakfast by the sea and then, when they had dined, asked him gently three times, lovest thou me? (John 21:15-17), often read as once for each denial. There was no humiliation, only restoration and a new task: Feed my lambs. That is how Jesus deals with our failures.

Growing a gentle spirit

9. Proverbs 25:15

"By long forbearing is a prince persuaded, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone."
Proverbs 25:15 (KJV)

By long forbearing means by patience. A ruler is more often persuaded by a patient, gentle approach than by force, and a soft tongue breaketh the bone: gentle words can break through the hardest resistance. It is one of the Bible's most surprising pictures. In an argument, a calm voice can be more powerful than a raised one.

10. 2 Timothy 2:25-26

"In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will."
2 Timothy 2:25-26 (KJV)

The verse before says "the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men" (2 Timothy 2:24). Paul tells Timothy to correct opponents in meekness, hoping God will lead them to repentance and freedom. Gentleness is not avoiding the truth; it is telling the truth in a way that leaves the door open for the other person to change.

11. James 3:13

"Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom."
James 3:13 (KJV)

James asks who is truly wise, and answers that wisdom shows itself in a good life lived with meekness of wisdom. Later he says, "the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle" (James 3:17). Real wisdom is not loud or proud. It is humble, peaceable and gentle with people.

12. Genesis 50:21

"Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them."
Genesis 50:21 (KJV)

After their father Jacob died, Joseph's brothers feared he would finally take revenge for selling him into slavery (Genesis 50:15). Joseph wept, reminded them that God had meant it for good (Genesis 50:20), promised to provide for their families, and spake kindly unto them. Gentleness is power that chooses mercy. See forgiveness.

A short prayer

Gentle Father, thank You for stooping down to lift me up, and for never breaking the bruised reed. Lord Jesus, thank You for restoring me with kindness when I fail. Holy Spirit, grow Your fruit of gentleness in me. Calm my quick temper and harsh words. Help me correct with patience, answer softly, and use whatever strength I have to protect and serve others. Make me gentle like Jesus, and strong in the same way He is strong. In His name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is gentleness in the Bible?

Biblical gentleness, often translated meekness, is strength under control: power used with restraint and care for others. Moses was "very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth" (Numbers 12:3), yet he led a nation; Jesus called Himself "meek and lowly in heart" (Matthew 11:29), yet He drove the money changers out of the temple. Gentleness is not weakness but love that refuses to bully.

Is gentleness a fruit of the Spirit?

Yes. In the King James Version the fruit of the Spirit is "love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith" (Galatians 5:22), followed by "Meekness, temperance" (Galatians 5:23). The KJV word gentleness there is often translated kindness in modern versions, and meekness is often translated gentleness, so both ideas belong together. See the fruit of the Spirit.

Does being gentle mean letting people walk all over me?

No. Gentleness is about how we use our strength, not about giving it up. Peter tells believers to defend their faith "with meekness and fear" (1 Peter 3:15), which means speaking clearly but respectfully. Jesus was gentle and also confronted injustice. Gentleness never requires accepting abuse; protecting yourself or others from harm is not a failure of gentleness. See respect.

How can I become more gentle?

Start with your words and your tone. "A soft answer turneth away wrath" (Proverbs 15:1). Slow down before you respond, assume the best where you can, and remember how gently God has treated you. Paul says, "Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand" (Philippians 4:5). Ask the Holy Spirit daily for the fruit of gentleness. See anger and self-control.
