"Guard your heart" comes from Proverbs 4:23, which in the KJV reads "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life." Because words and actions flow from the heart (Luke 6:45), Scripture urges filling it with God's word (Psalm 119:11), focusing on what is true and pure (Philippians 4:8), and asking God to search it (Psalm 139:23-24).
In the Bible, the "heart" is the control center of a person: thoughts, desires, and choices. That is why Scripture spends so much time on guarding it. Here are ten KJV passages.
Why guard your heart
1. Proverbs 4:23
"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."
The key verse. "Keep" means guard like a watchman; "issues of life" means the sources or springs from which life flows.
2. Luke 6:45
"A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."
Words reveal the heart: "of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh."
3. Matthew 15:18-19
"But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:"
Jesus teaches that what defiles comes from within, not from outside food or rituals.
4. Jeremiah 17:9-10
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."
The heart can deceive even its owner, but the LORD searches and knows it.
How to guard it
5. Psalms 119:11
"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee."
Memorizing Scripture is a practical defense: God's word hidden in the heart helps resist sin.
6. Philippians 4:8
"Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."
A filter for the mind: dwell on what is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.
7. Philippians 4:7
"And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Paul's promise that God's peace will "keep" (literally garrison or guard) hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
Prayers for a clean heart
8. Psalms 51:10
"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."
David's prayer after his sin with Bathsheba (Psalm 51). Only God can create a clean heart.
9. Psalms 139:23-24
"Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."
An invitation for God to examine the heart and reveal anything that needs to change.
10. Psalms 19:14
"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer."
A prayer many pastors pray before preaching: that both words and inner meditation please God.
A short prayer
Search me, O God, and know my heart. Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Help me fill my mind with what is true and pure, and let Your peace guard my heart today. In Jesus' name, amen.
