The Bible says a godly legacy matters more than wealth: "A good name is better than precious ointment" (Ecclesiastes 7:1). The greatest legacy is faith passed on: "This shall be written for the generation to come" (Psalm 102:18). David's life is a model, "after he had served his own generation by the will of God" (Acts 13:36), and God promises the upright that "their inheritance shall be for ever" (Psalm 37:18).
Sooner or later, most people ask the legacy question: What will remain when I am gone? A milestone birthday, a funeral, a retirement party or the birth of a grandchild can bring it to the surface. Our culture often answers with money, buildings or fame. The Bible answers with a good name, faithful love and a faith handed down from one generation to the next. Some of the people with the greatest legacies in Scripture had little money and were never famous. These twelve King James verses explore a good name that outlasts you, passing on faith to children and grandchildren, and building a life that lasts. Use them for a eulogy, a letter to your grandchildren, a retirement card or your own reflection on how you want to be remembered. A good name and a life that outlasts you
1. Ecclesiastes 7:1
"A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth."
A good name is better than precious ointment. In the ancient world, fine perfumed oil was a luxury that filled a room with its scent. Solomon says a good reputation is worth more, and it lingers longer. The second half is surprising: the day of death than the day of one's birth. At birth a life is all possibility; at death it is complete, and a good name is what remains. Legacy is built one ordinary day at a time.
2. Acts 13:36-37
"For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption: But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption."
Paul summed up King David's whole life in one sentence: he served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep. David could not serve every generation, only his own. Neither can we. A legacy is not about controlling the future; it is about being faithful now, in our time and place. Then Paul points to Jesus, whom God raised again: our legacy ultimately rests in the One who conquered death.
3. Mark 14:9
"Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her."
A woman broke a jar of costly ointment over Jesus' head, and some of the disciples criticized her for wasting it. Jesus said that wherever the gospel is preached, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her. Two thousand years later, we are still telling her story. She did not plan a legacy. She simply loved Jesus extravagantly. That kind of love is never forgotten.
4. Ecclesiastes 2:18
"Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me."
Solomon was honest about the frustration of legacy: I hated all my labour... because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. He worried that a fool might inherit everything he built (Ecclesiastes 2:19). Anyone who has built a business, a ministry or a family home can understand. The lesson is not to stop working, but to hold earthly things loosely and invest in what cannot be lost.
Passing faith to the next generation
5. Psalms 44:1
"We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old."
our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days. Faith was passed on in Israel by telling stories. Parents and grandparents told children what God had done. One of the most valuable things you can leave your family is your testimony: how you came to faith, how God answered prayer, how He carried you through hard times. Write it down, record it, or simply tell it at the dinner table.
6. Psalms 102:18
"This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD."
This shall be written for the generation to come. The psalmist wanted his experience of God to be recorded for people not yet born. Many Christians keep journals, Bibles with notes in the margins or letters for their children and grandchildren. Years later, those pages become treasures. A Bible with your handwriting in it may be one of the most meaningful things you ever leave behind.
7. Psalms 22:30-31
"A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this."
Psalm 22 begins with the cry Jesus prayed on the cross, but it ends in hope: A seed shall serve him, and They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born. Generations not yet born will hear of what God has done. Every faithful life adds a chapter to that story. Your faithfulness today may shape people you will never meet.
8. Hebrews 11:21
"By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff."
Of all the events in Jacob's long and complicated life, Hebrews chooses this one: when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff. At the end, Jacob blessed his grandchildren and worshipped God. That is a beautiful picture of legacy: an old man, leaning on a walking stick, speaking blessing over the next generation. It is never too late to bless.
Building what lasts
9. 1 Corinthians 3:10
"According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon."
Paul described himself as a wise masterbuilder who laid a foundation that others would build on. The next verse names the only foundation that lasts: "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 3:11). Then Paul warns, let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. What we build with our lives, our time, money and love, will be tested.
10. Numbers 27:18-19
"And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him; And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight."
Near the end of his life, Moses asked God to appoint a leader so the people would not be left without one (Numbers 27:16-17). God told him to lay thine hand upon him and give him a charge in their sight. Moses publicly handed leadership to Joshua. A healthy legacy includes preparing the next generation: mentoring, training and blessing those who will carry on the work after you.
11. Isaiah 58:12
"And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in."
Isaiah promises that those who live justly and generously will raise up the foundations of many generations and be called The repairer of the breach. Legacy is not only about passing down what we received; it can mean repairing what was broken before us. If you came from a family marked by addiction, abuse or unbelief, you can be the generation where things change.
12. Psalms 37:18
"The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever."
The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever. God knows every day of your life, the seen and the unseen. Earthly legacies fade; buildings fall and names are forgotten. But what is done for God has an inheritance that lasts forever. Jesus told us to store up treasure in heaven, where nothing can destroy it (Matthew 6:20). That is the legacy that truly lasts.
A short prayer
Lord, my days are in Your hands, and You know every one of them. Help me serve my own generation faithfully, by Your will. Give me a good name, not for my glory but for Yours. Help me tell my children and grandchildren what You have done, and write it down for those not yet born. Teach me to build on Jesus Christ, the only foundation that lasts, and to bless the next generation while I can. Let my life leave an inheritance that lasts forever. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about leaving a legacy?
Scripture values a good name over riches (Ecclesiastes 7:1, Proverbs 22:1), faith passed down through generations (Psalm 78:4-7), and treasure stored in heaven (Matthew 6:20). Proverbs also says, "A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children" (Proverbs 13:22). The greatest legacy is a life that points others to God.
How can I leave a spiritual legacy for my family?
Tell your story of faith, pray for and with your children and grandchildren, read the Bible together, and live consistently in front of them. Write letters or notes in a Bible to pass down. Bless them with your words, as Jacob did (Hebrews 11:21). Paul remembered Timothy's "unfeigned faith... which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice" (2 Timothy 1:5). See Bible verses about parenting.
What is a good Bible verse for a eulogy or memorial?
For someone who lived faithfully, Acts 13:36, Psalm 37:18 and Ecclesiastes 7:1 speak of a life well lived. Revelation 14:13 is also often read: "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth... that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them" (Revelation 14:13). See Bible verses about funerals.
Is it ever too late to build a legacy?
No. Jacob blessed his grandsons on his deathbed (Hebrews 11:21), and the thief on the cross turned to Jesus in his final hours (Luke 23:42-43). You can begin today: forgive someone, tell your story, bless a grandchild, give generously, or start a journal of God's faithfulness. "So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom" (Psalm 90:12).
