"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). "For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you" (Deuteronomy 20:4). Many service members carry Psalm 91: "He is my refuge and my fortress" (Psalm 91:2). And Paul urges, "honour to whom honour" (Romans 13:7).
Every November 11, Americans pause on Veterans Day to thank the men and women who have served in the armed forces. The Bible speaks to soldiers directly: it records faithful centurions, gives soldiers practical commands, offers protection psalms carried into battle, and honors those who lay down their lives for others. These twelve King James verses are for service members, veterans, and military families, whether you are deploying, coming home, or remembering. We share them with gratitude and with prayer for the day when nations learn war no more.
Courage and protection for those who serve
1. Deuteronomy 20:4
"For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you."
Spoken to Israel's army before battle: the LORD goes with you to save you. Service members do not go alone.
2. Psalms 91:1-2
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust."
Psalm 91 is often called the soldier's psalm, and many troops have carried it in a pocket Bible. Its opening confession, my refuge and my fortress, is a prayer for anyone facing danger.
3. Psalms 144:1
"Blessed be the LORD my strength, which teacheth my hands to war, and my fingers to fight:"
David was a warrior before he was a king, and he credited God with teaching his hands to war. Skill and training can be offered to God in a calling to protect others.
4. Joshua 1:9
"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
God's charge to Joshua as he led Israel into a hard campaign: be strong and of a good courage, for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest, including deployments far from home.
Soldiers of faith in the Bible
5. Luke 3:14
"And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely; and be content with your wages."
When soldiers asked John the Baptist what repentance looked like, he did not tell them to quit. He said to do violence to no man, accuse no one falsely, and be content with their wages. Integrity in uniform honors God.
6. Acts 10:1-2
"There was a certain man in Cæsarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway."
Cornelius, a Roman centurion, was devout, generous, and prayed to God continually, and his household was among the first Gentiles to receive the gospel. Jesus also marvelled at another centurion's faith (Matthew 8:10).
7. 2 Timothy 2:3-4
"Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier."
Paul borrowed the soldier's life to describe faithful discipleship: endure hardness, stay focused, and aim to please the one who enlisted you.
8. Isaiah 6:8
"Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me."
Here am I; send me. Isaiah's answer to God has become a motto for many who volunteer to serve.
Honoring veterans and praying for peace
9. John 15:13
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
Jesus spoke these words the night before He laid down His own life. Often read at military memorials, they describe the love behind sacrifice and point to Christ's greater sacrifice for us.
10. Romans 13:7
"Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour."
Render honour to whom honour is due. Thanking a veteran, supporting a military family, and remembering the fallen are simple ways to obey this verse on Veterans Day and all year.
11. Isaiah 2:4
"And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more."
They shall beat their swords into plowshares; nation shall not lift up sword against nation. This promise of Christ's reign is the hope behind every prayer for peace.
12. Psalms 34:18
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart. Service can leave invisible wounds, and many families carry grief. God draws near to the hurting, and asking for help is a sign of strength.
A short prayer
Lord, thank You for the men and women who have served. Be a refuge and fortress to those on duty today, bring them safely home, and comfort the families who wait or grieve. Heal invisible wounds, and hasten the day when war shall be no more. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about the military?
The Bible records faithful soldiers like Cornelius (Acts 10:1-2), gives soldiers commands about integrity (Luke 3:14), uses the soldier as a picture of discipleship (2 Timothy 2:3-4), and honors sacrificial love: "Greater love hath no man than this" (John 15:13). It also looks forward to the day when nations shall not "learn war any more" (Isaiah 2:4).
What is a good Bible verse for Veterans Day?
John 15:13, Romans 13:7 and Isaiah 6:8 are fitting for a Veterans Day card or program. For a service member still on duty, Psalm 91:1-2 and Joshua 1:9 are favorites.
What is the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day?
Veterans Day (November 11) honors everyone who has served in the US armed forces, living or dead. Memorial Day (the last Monday of May) remembers those who died in service.
If you are a veteran or service member in crisis, or you are worried about one, call 988 and press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line, 24 hours a day (call 911 in an emergency). If you are grieving someone who died in service, our pages on grief and lost loved ones may help.
