Scripture often uses race and games imagery for the Christian life: run to obtain (1 Corinthians 9:24), compete lawfully (2 Timothy 2:5), lay aside every weight and run with patience (Hebrews 12:1-2), and finish the course (2 Timothy 4:7). Bodily exercise profits little beside godliness (1 Timothy 4:8)—yet diligence and fair play still matter.
The Bible does not describe modern leagues, but it speaks vividly of races, crowns, and lawful competition. These twelve King James passages lean into athletics, sportsmanship, and "running the race"—distinct from pages on strength God supplies in weakness. They fit athletes, coaches, and anyone who wants Scripture for the field, court, or track.
Run to obtain
1. 1 Corinthians 9:24
"Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain."
Paul points to the stadium: many run, but one receives the prize. Believers are urged to run so as to obtain—not casually, but with purpose.
2. 1 Corinthians 9:25
"And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible."
Athletes are temperate in all things for a corruptible crown; Christians strive for an incorruptible one. Discipline on the field mirrors spiritual self-control.
3. 1 Corinthians 9:26-27
"I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway."
Paul does not run uncertainly or fight as one beating the air. He keeps his body under subjection so he will not be a castaway after preaching to others.
4. Hebrews 12:1-2
"Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God."
Surrounded by witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily besets, and run with patience, looking unto Jesus—the pioneer and finisher of faith.
Compete lawfully and finish
5. 2 Timothy 2:5
"And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully."
If a man strive for masteries, he is not crowned except he strive lawfully. Victory without fair rules is no crown—sportsmanship and integrity matter.
6. 2 Timothy 4:7
"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:"
Near the end of his life Paul says: I have fought a good fight, finished my course, kept the faith. The race has a finish line worth crossing.
7. Philippians 3:13-14
"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus."
Forgetting what is behind and reaching forth, Paul presses toward the mark for the prize of the high calling in Christ—forward motion after every setback.
8. Galatians 5:7
"Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?"
"Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth?" A good start can be blocked; stay in the lane of obedience.
Training, effort, and trust
9. 1 Timothy 4:8
"For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."
Bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable unto all things. Fitness has value; it must not replace spiritual training.
10. Ecclesiastes 9:11
"I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all."
The race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong. Outcomes are not only talent—time and chance under God's providence matter too.
11. Psalms 18:29
"For by thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall."
"By thee I have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall." Strength for the leap comes from the Lord, not ego alone.
12. Proverbs 21:31
"The horse is prepared against the day of battle: but safety is of the LORD."
The horse is prepared against the day of battle, but safety is of the LORD. Prepare hard—then trust God with the result.
A short prayer
Lord Jesus, Author and Finisher of my faith, help me run with patience and strive lawfully. Teach me discipline without vanity, effort without despair, and to seek an incorruptible crown above every earthly prize. In Your name, amen.
