Bible Verses About Addiction: 12 Scriptures for Freedom from Bondage

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed" (John 8:36). Sin need not reign (Romans 6:14); believers are called to renew the mind (Romans 12:2) and stand fast in liberty (Galatians 5:1). "All things are lawful unto me, but I will not be brought under the power of any" (1 Corinthians 6:12). God brings out of darkness and breaks bands (Psalm 107:13-14).

Addiction—whether substances, screens, habits, or other bondage—is not named with that modern word in the KJV, but Scripture speaks clearly about slavery to sin, freedom in Christ, and a renewed mind. These twelve King James passages offer spiritual hope for anyone who feels trapped. This page is encouragement from God's word, not a treatment plan.

Free indeed

1. John 8:36

"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
John 8:36 (KJV)

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. Freedom from bondage is Jesus' work—real freedom, not partial or theoretical.

2. Galatians 5:1

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage."
Galatians 5:1 (KJV)

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. Freedom must be guarded; old yokes try to return.

3. Romans 6:14

"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace."
Romans 6:14 (KJV)

For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Grace does not excuse sin's reign; it breaks it.

4. Psalms 107:13-14

"Then they cried unto the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder."
Psalms 107:13-14 (KJV)

Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them... He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death, and brake their bands in sunder. Cry out; God breaks bands.

Not under the power of any

5. 1 Corinthians 6:12

"All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any."
1 Corinthians 6:12 (KJV)

All things are lawful unto me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Even permitted things can enslave. Refuse to be mastered.

6. Romans 7:24-25

"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin."
Romans 7:24-25 (KJV)

O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Honest despair meets a named Deliverer.

7. Isaiah 61:1

"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;"
Isaiah 61:1 (KJV)

The Lord hath anointed me... to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. Jesus read this as His mission (Luke 4). Captivity is His specialty.

8. 2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. Recovery hope includes a new identity, not only new habits.

Renew the mind; stand firm

9. Romans 12:2

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Romans 12:2 (KJV)

Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. Freedom grows as thinking is renewed—patterns of thought, not only behaviour.

10. Philippians 4:13

"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
Philippians 4:13 (KJV)

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. Strength for the next obedient step comes from Christ, not from white-knuckle will alone.

11. 1 Peter 5:8-9

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world."
1 Peter 5:8-9 (KJV)

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: whom resist stedfast in the faith. Addiction battles often include spiritual resistance in community.

12. 2 Timothy 1:7

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV)

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. A sound mind is God's gift—clarity and self-possession under His Spirit.

A short prayer

Lord Jesus, You make free indeed. I feel the pull of bondage, and I cry to You as they did in Psalm 107. Break my bands. Renew my mind. Help me stand fast in Your liberty and refuse to be brought under the power of anything but You. Give me power, love, and a sound mind—and people who walk with me. In Your name, amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about addiction?

Scripture speaks of bondage and freedom: the Son makes free indeed (John 8:36), sin need not have dominion (Romans 6:14), we must not be brought under the power of anything (1 Corinthians 6:12), and God breaks bands (Psalm 107:13-14).

Can God free someone from addiction?

Yes. Jesus proclaimed liberty to captives (Isaiah 61:1), makes free indeed (John 8:36), and makes people new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17). Freedom often also involves wise counselors, community, and sometimes medical care.

What Bible verse says I can do all things through Christ?

Philippians 4:13: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." In context it includes contentment in hard places—strength for the next step.

Is addiction only a spiritual problem?

Scripture addresses the spiritual root of bondage, but wisdom also seeks practical help. Talk to a doctor, pastor, or licensed counselor. This page is spiritual encouragement, not medical advice.
