Bible Verses About Dancing: 12 KJV Scriptures on Dancing for Joy Before the LORD

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The Bible speaks of dancing mostly as joyful worship. "David danced before the LORD with all his might" (2 Samuel 6:14), and the psalms say, "Let them praise his name in the dance" (Psalm 149:3). There is "a time to dance" (Ecclesiastes 3:4), and God can turn "my mourning into dancing" (Psalm 30:11). Scripture also shows dancing that dishonoured God, so the heart behind it matters.

Dancing shows up in the Bible at victories, weddings, harvests, homecomings and worship. People look up these verses before a father-daughter dance, a wedding reception or a worship dance ministry, and sometimes because they have been told that dancing is a sin. These twelve King James verses cover dancing before the LORD, dancing as a sign that sorrow has turned to joy, and a few stories that show how dancing can go wrong. For singing and instruments, see music; for joy in general, see rejoicing.

Dancing before the LORD

1. 2 Samuel 6:14

"And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod."
2 Samuel 6:14 (KJV)

When the ark of the covenant came to Jerusalem, King David danced with all his might, wearing a simple linen ephod rather than royal robes. His dance was wholehearted worship, not a performance. See worship.

2. 2 Samuel 6:16

"And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart."
2 Samuel 6:16 (KJV)

David's wife Michal watched him leaping and dancing and despised him in her heart. David answered that he had danced before the LORD (2 Samuel 6:21). Joyful worship may look undignified to others; God sees the heart.

3. Psalms 149:3

"Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp."
Psalms 149:3 (KJV)

The psalms invite God's people to praise His name in the dance, with timbrel and harp. In Israel, dance was a normal part of celebrating God's goodness, often together with music and song.

4. Psalms 150:4

"Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs."
Psalms 150:4 (KJV)

The last psalm in the Bible lists ways to praise God, and dance is on the list beside stringed instruments and organs. The book of praises ends with a full celebration.

Mourning turned into dancing

5. Psalms 30:11

"Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;"
Psalms 30:11 (KJV)

This verse also appears on our joy comes in the morning page, because it is the Bible's clearest picture of grief giving way to joy. God takes off the sackcloth of mourning and girds us with gladness.

6. Jeremiah 31:4

"Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry."
Jeremiah 31:4 (KJV)

Speaking to exiles who had lost everything, God promised that Israel would again go forth in the dances of them that make merry. Dancing is a sign of restoration: the hard season will not last for ever. See restoration.

7. Luke 15:25

"Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard musick and dancing."
Luke 15:25 (KJV)

When the prodigal son came home, his father threw a feast, and the elder brother heard music and dancing. Heaven celebrates when the lost are found (Luke 15:7), and so should we.

8. Acts 3:8

"And he leaping up stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God."
Acts 3:8 (KJV)

A man lame from birth was healed at the temple gate, and he went in walking, leaping and praising God. His leap was a spontaneous response to God's grace, like a dance of thanks.

Dancing in Bible stories: celebration and caution

9. 1 Samuel 18:6

"And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul, with tabrets, with joy, and with instruments of musick."
1 Samuel 18:6 (KJV)

After David's victory over Goliath, the women of Israel came out singing and dancing. It was a joyful national celebration, yet the next verses show Saul's jealousy when the songs praised David more (1 Samuel 18:7-9).

10. Exodus 32:19

"And it came to pass, as soon as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf, and the dancing: and Moses' anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and brake them beneath the mount."
Exodus 32:19 (KJV)

When Moses came down the mountain, he saw the golden calf and the dancing. The problem was not dance itself but dancing to worship an idol. Celebration that turns away from God becomes something else. See idols.

11. Matthew 14:6

"But when Herod's birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod."
Matthew 14:6 (KJV)

The daughter of Herodias danced at Herod's birthday party, and Herod made a rash oath that led to the death of John the Baptist (Matthew 14:7-10). The story warns about entertainment used to manipulate and about careless promises.

12. Luke 7:32

"They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept."
Luke 7:32 (KJV)

Jesus compared His generation to children who would not dance when the pipe played or weep at a funeral game. Some people will criticise both joy and sorrow. Do not let critics keep you from rejoicing in what God has done.

A short prayer

Lord, thank You that You turn mourning into dancing. Give me a heart like David's that worships You with all my might, without worrying about how it looks to others. Keep my celebrations pure and pointed toward You, and when I am in a sad season, remind me that there will again be a time to dance. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Is dancing a sin according to the Bible?

No verse forbids dancing. Scripture praises dancing before the LORD (Psalm 150:4) and says there is "a time to dance" (Ecclesiastes 3:4). The Bible does warn against what can surround dancing, such as idolatry (Exodus 32:19), drunkenness and lust (Galatians 5:19-21). Christians differ on styles and settings, so follow your conscience and your church's guidance, and ask whether a dance honours God and others.

What Bible verse is good for a father-daughter dance?

Many families choose Zephaniah 3:17, where God "will joy over thee with singing" (Zephaniah 3:17), or a blessing like "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee" (Numbers 6:24). For a playful line on a printed program, "a time to laugh ... a time to dance" (Ecclesiastes 3:4) fits well. See also father and daughter.

Did David dance naked before the LORD?

No. 2 Samuel 6:14 says David "was girded with a linen ephod" (2 Samuel 6:14), a simple priestly garment. Michal mocked him for uncovering himself (2 Samuel 6:20) because he had set aside his royal robes to dance among the people, not because he wore nothing. His humility, not immodesty, was the point.

What does it mean that God turned my mourning into dancing?

Psalm 30:11 is David's testimony after God rescued him. It does not mean grief is wrong or ends overnight; earlier the psalm admits "weeping may endure for a night" (Psalm 30:5). It means God has the last word: sorrow is real, but joy will come, and one day He will wipe away every tear (Revelation 21:4). See grief.
