Jesus said, "Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve" (Matthew 4:10). True worshippers "worship the Father in spirit and in truth" (John 4:23). "O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker" (Psalm 95:6). Worship is also a whole life: "present your bodies a living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1).
Worship is giving God the honor He deserves, with songs, with bowed knees, and with our whole lives. These twelve King James passages show whom we worship, how we worship (in spirit and in truth), and what it sounds like when God's people sing together. Worship overlaps with prayer and thanksgiving but is its own thing: for talking with God, see prayer; for thankfulness, see gratitude.
Worship God alone
1. Matthew 4:10
"Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve."
Jesus answered Satan from Deuteronomy: worship belongs to God alone. Anything else that takes His place becomes an idol.
2. Revelation 4:11
"Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created."
Heaven's worship centers on God as Creator: He is worthy because He made all things. Worship begins with seeing who He is.
3. Psalms 29:2
"Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness."
Give the LORD the glory due unto His name. Worship is not doing God a favor; it is giving Him what is rightly His.
4. Psalms 96:9
"O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth."
The beauty of holiness: God's holiness is beautiful, and reverent worship trembles before it with joy.
In spirit and in truth
5. John 4:23-24
"But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."
Worship is not tied to a mountain or a building. The Father seeks worshippers who come in spirit (from the heart, by the Spirit) and in truth (according to who He really is).
6. Romans 12:1
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."
Worship is whole-life: present your body as a living sacrifice. Monday faithfulness is as much worship as Sunday singing.
7. Hebrews 12:28
"Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:"
Because we receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken, we serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. Grace produces awe, not casualness.
8. Psalms 95:6
"O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker."
Worship involves the body: bowing and kneeling before the LORD our Maker. Posture can teach the heart humility.
Sing and praise together
9. Colossians 3:16
"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord."
Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs let the word of Christ dwell in us richly. Singing together is a way of teaching each other.
10. Ephesians 5:19
"Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;"
Spirit-filled people sing, to one another and in their hearts to the Lord.
11. Psalms 34:3
"O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together."
Worship is meant to be shared: magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together.
12. Psalms 150:6
"Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD."
The Psalms end with everything that has breath praising the LORD. If you are breathing, you are invited.
A short prayer
Lord, You alone are worthy. Teach me to worship You in spirit and in truth, with my voice, my knees, and my whole life. Let my body be a living sacrifice and my heart sing to You even on ordinary days. Let everything that has breath, including me, praise You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about worship?
Worship belongs to God alone (Matthew 4:10), who is worthy as Creator (Revelation 4:11). It is offered in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24), with reverence (Hebrews 12:28), in song (Colossians 3:16), and with our whole lives (Romans 12:1).
What does it mean to worship in spirit and in truth?
In John 4:23-24 Jesus says worship is not limited to a place. It comes from the heart, by the Holy Spirit, and it is shaped by the truth of who God has revealed Himself to be.
Is worship only singing?
No. Singing is commanded (Colossians 3:16; Ephesians 5:19), but Romans 12:1 calls the offering of our whole lives our "reasonable service."
What is the difference between praise and worship?
They overlap. Praise often celebrates what God has done; worship bows before who God is. Psalm 95 moves from joyful praise (verses 1-2) to bowing in worship (verse 6).
