Scripture calls believers to give thanks in everything (1 Thessalonians 5:18), enter God's presence with thanksgiving (Psalm 100:4), and let gratitude shape words and worship (Colossians 3:15-17; Ephesians 5:20). "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good" (Psalm 107:1).
Gratitude in the Bible is more than good manners. It is a way of remembering God's goodness, even in hard seasons. These twelve King James passages show why thanksgiving belongs in prayer, worship, and daily life.
Give thanks in everything
1. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."
"In every thing" does not mean every event is pleasant; it means thanksgiving has a place in every circumstance, because God's will is to shape a grateful people.
2. Ephesians 5:20
"Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;"
Paul links Spirit-filled living with giving thanks "always for all things" to God the Father in Jesus' name.
3. Philippians 4:6
"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God."
Thanksgiving is part of how we bring requests to God. Gratitude and petition belong in the same prayer.
4. Colossians 3:15-17
"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him."
Peace, the word of Christ, singing, and whatever you do: Paul wraps Christian community in thankfulness.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving
5. Psalms 100:4
"Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name."
A call to worship: enter God's gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Gratitude is the doorway.
6. Psalms 95:2
"Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms."
Come before His presence with thanksgiving. Public worship and private prayer both start with thanks.
7. Psalms 107:1
"O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."
A repeated refrain in the Psalms: thank the LORD because He is good and His mercy endures forever.
8. Psalms 136:1
"O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."
The same call opens a psalm where every line answers "for his mercy endureth for ever."
Remember the Giver
9. James 1:17
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning."
Every good gift comes from the Father of lights, who does not change. Gratitude looks past the gift to the Giver.
10. Psalms 118:24
"This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."
This is the day the LORD has made: rejoice and be glad in it. Daily gratitude starts with receiving the day as His.
11. Colossians 2:7
"Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving."
Rooted and built up in Christ, believers abound in thanksgiving. Gratitude grows with spiritual maturity.
12. Hebrews 13:15
"By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name."
Praise is called a "sacrifice of thanksgiving": lips that continually give thanks to His name.
A short prayer
Father, every good gift comes from You. Forgive me when I forget to say thank You. Teach me to enter Your presence with thanksgiving, to give thanks in everything, and to overflow with gratitude today. In Jesus' name, amen.
