Thanksgiving Prayers for Dinner, Family and a Grateful Heart, Each Built on a KJV Verse

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

A short Christian Thanksgiving prayer: Heavenly Father, we give You thanks, for You are good and Your mercy endures forever. Thank You for this food, for the hands that prepared it and for every person at this table. Thank You for the blessings of this year, seen and unseen. Make us generous to those in need, and grateful every day, not only today. In Jesus' name, Amen. Below are more prayers for the meal, the family and the season, each based on a King James verse.

Thanksgiving Day is Thursday, November 26, 2026, and for many families the prayer before the meal is the most meaningful moment of the day. Giving thanks to God before eating is an old and biblical habit. Jesus gave thanks before He fed the crowds, and Paul gave thanks for bread on a sinking ship. A Thanksgiving prayer can be short. What matters is that it is honest and directed to the Giver, not just the gifts. This page offers short prayers you can read aloud at the table, each built on a King James verse so your words rest on Scripture. The first group is for blessing the meal. The second is for thanking God for His goodness through the year and the harvest. The third is for a grateful heart that lasts beyond one day, including the story of the one leper who came back to say thank you. You can choose one prayer, or pass the page around and let each person read a verse and its prayer. Thanksgiving dinner prayers: blessing the meal

1. Matthew 15:36

"And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude."
Matthew 15:36 (KJV)

Before feeding four thousand people, Jesus took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks. He did not wait until there was plenty. He gave thanks for what was in His hands, and God multiplied it. Pray it: Lord Jesus, You gave thanks for a small meal and fed a multitude. We give thanks for this food and for all You have provided. Bless it, and use our family to share with others who have less. Amen.

2. Acts 27:35

"And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat."
Acts 27:35 (KJV)

Paul was on a ship in a violent storm with 276 frightened people. He took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all, and everyone took courage and ate. Thanksgiving is not only for easy years. Pray it: Father, some of us come to this table after a hard year. Like Paul in the storm, we still give You thanks in front of everyone here. You have carried us. Give courage to anyone who needs it today. Amen.

3. Psalms 136:25

"Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever."
Psalms 136:25 (KJV)

Psalm 136 repeats one line twenty-six times, and families can read it responsively: one person reads the first half of each verse and everyone answers for his mercy endureth for ever. This verse says God giveth food to all flesh. Pray it: Lord, every bite on this table came from You, through farmers, workers and cooks. Your mercy endures forever. Thank You for daily bread, and help us remember those who are hungry today. Amen.

4. Deuteronomy 26:11

"And thou shalt rejoice in every good thing which the LORD thy God hath given unto thee, and unto thine house, thou, and the Levite, and the stranger that is among you."
Deuteronomy 26:11 (KJV)

When Israel brought the firstfruits of the harvest, God told them to rejoice in every good thing and to include the Levite, and the stranger that is among you. Biblical thanksgiving makes room at the table. Pray it: Father, we rejoice in every good thing You have given our household. Open our home and our hands to the lonely, the stranger and the neighbor in need, this season and all year. Amen.

Prayers of thanks for God's goodness and the harvest

5. Psalms 106:1

"Praise ye the LORD. O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."
Psalms 106:1 (KJV)

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. This is one of the most repeated lines in the Bible, sung at the temple and at many Thanksgiving tables. It is a perfect one-sentence prayer for kids to learn. Pray it: Lord, we give You thanks because You are good. Your mercy has followed us every day this year, and it will never run out. Amen.

6. Psalms 107:8

"Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!"
Psalms 107:8 (KJV)

Psalm 107 tells stories of travelers, prisoners, sick people and sailors who cried to God and were rescued, and after each story comes this refrain: Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness. Pray it: Lord, we remember the times this year when we cried out and You answered. Thank You for every rescue, every healing and every door You opened. We praise You for Your wonderful works. Amen. Consider inviting each person to share one answered prayer.

7. Psalms 65:13

"The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing."
Psalms 65:13 (KJV)

Psalm 65 is a harvest song. The valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing. In the KJV, corn means grain. The whole creation seems to celebrate God's provision. Pray it: Creator God, thank You for rain, sun, soil and harvest. Thank You for full fields and full tables. Let our hearts shout for joy and sing, just like the valleys and pastures You made. Amen.

8. Psalms 75:1

"Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks: for that thy name is near thy wondrous works declare."
Psalms 75:1 (KJV)

Unto thee, O God, do we give thanks, unto thee do we give thanks. The psalmist says it twice, as if once is not enough. Thanksgiving is ultimately aimed at God, not at luck or our own hard work. Pray it: O God, we give You thanks, and we give You thanks again. Your wondrous works show that You are near. Keep us from taking credit for what only You could give. Amen.

Prayers for a grateful heart all year

9. Psalms 79:13

"So we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations."
Psalms 79:13 (KJV)

We thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations. Thanksgiving is a great day to tell the next generation what God has done. Pray it: Good Shepherd, we are the sheep of Your pasture. Help us tell our children and grandchildren how You have provided for our family, so that gratitude is passed down along with the recipes. Amen.

10. Psalms 30:12

"To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever."
Psalms 30:12 (KJV)

David ends Psalm 30, a song about God turning mourning into dancing, with a promise: O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever. Pray it: Lord, You have turned sorrow into joy for us more than once. We do not want our gratitude to be silent or to last only one day. Make us thankful people every morning of the year ahead. Amen. For more, see Bible verses about being thankful.

11. Luke 17:15-16

"And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan."
Luke 17:15-16 (KJV)

Jesus healed ten lepers, but only one turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks, and he was a Samaritan, an outsider. Jesus asked, where are the nine? (Luke 17:17). Pray it: Lord, we do not want to be among the nine who forgot. Today we come back to thank You for every healing, rescue and kindness. Amen.

12. Revelation 7:12

"Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen."
Revelation 7:12 (KJV)

In heaven, worship includes thanksgiving forever: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. This is a powerful verse to close your Thanksgiving prayer, and the whole table can say the final Amen together. Pray it: Lord, our thanks today is a small rehearsal for heaven, where we will thank You forever. Amen.

A short prayer

Gracious Father, on this Thanksgiving we come to You with grateful hearts. Thank You for life and breath, for family and friends, for food on this table and a roof over our heads. Thank You most of all for Jesus, who gave Himself for us. We remember those who are hungry, lonely, sick or grieving today, and we ask You to show us how to help. Make us thankful in every season, and let our gratitude overflow into generosity. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is a short Thanksgiving prayer for dinner?

Try this: Lord, thank You for this food, this family and this day. You are good, and Your mercy endures forever. Bless the hands that made this meal, and help us share Your blessings with others. In Jesus' name, Amen. Or simply read Psalm 106:1 aloud together. For children, have each person name one thing they are thankful for before the Amen. See Bible verses about family for a verse to read with it.

What does the Bible say about giving thanks?

It says a lot. Paul writes, "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). The Psalms are full of thanksgiving, and Jesus gave thanks before meals and before the Last Supper. Thanksgiving in the Bible is both a feeling and a choice, a way of remembering who provides everything we have. Read more in Bible verses about thanksgiving.

Is there a Thanksgiving prayer in the Bible?

Yes. Many psalms are prayers of thanks, especially Psalm 100, Psalm 103, Psalm 107 and Psalm 136. Psalm 100 is often read at Thanksgiving: it begins, "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands" (Psalm 100:1), and invites us to enter into his gates with thanksgiving (Psalm 100:4). David's prayer in 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 is another beautiful option. Print it with the free Thanksgiving printable.

How can I pray at Thanksgiving when I don't feel thankful?

Start small and be honest. Paul and Silas sang in prison, and Paul gave thanks in a storm. Thankfulness does not deny pain. It looks for God's goodness inside it. You might pray: Lord, this year was hard, but You are still good. Help me see one gift today. Many people find that writing down three blessings each day changes their outlook over time.
