Scripture ties thanksgiving to remembering God's gifts after plenty (Deuteronomy 8:10), declaring His deeds with song (1 Chronicles 16:8-9), and offering thanks as worship (Psalm 50:14; Psalm 116:17). "It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD" (Psalm 92:1).
Thanksgiving in the Bible is often corporate and seasonal: feasts, offerings, and public praise after harvest or deliverance. These twelve King James passages lean into that feast-and-worship angle—how God's people gather to thank Him—rather than only the daily habit of gratitude.
Remember and give thanks
1. Deuteronomy 8:10
"When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God for the good land which he hath given thee."
After eating and being full in the promised land, Israel is told to bless the LORD. Thanksgiving follows provision so prosperity does not erase memory of the Giver.
2. 1 Chronicles 16:8-9
"Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works."
David's song when the ark arrived: give thanks, call on His name, make known His deeds, sing psalms. Thanksgiving is public testimony.
3. 1 Chronicles 29:13
"Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name."
In a prayer over offerings for the temple, David thanks God that His people could give at all. Giving and thanksgiving belong together.
4. Psalms 65:11
"Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy paths drop fatness."
God crowns the year with goodness; paths drop fatness. A harvest picture of seasonal blessing that invites seasonal thanks.
Thanksgiving as worship
5. Psalms 50:14
"Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High:"
"Offer unto God thanksgiving" sits beside paying vows. Thanks is itself an offering God desires.
6. Psalms 92:1
"It is a good thing to give thanks unto the LORD, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High:"
A simple verdict: it is good to give thanks to the LORD and to sing praises to His name—fitting for a Sabbath or feast day.
7. Psalms 116:17
"I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD."
The psalmist will offer the "sacrifice of thanksgiving" and call on the LORD's name—thanks as vowed worship after deliverance.
8. Psalms 69:30
"I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving."
Praise with a song and magnifying God with thanksgiving: verbal thanks that lifts God's name.
Thanks that overflows
9. 2 Corinthians 9:11
"Being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness, which causeth through us thanksgiving to God."
Generosity produces thanksgiving to God. When needs are met through giving, the result is many people thanking Him.
10. Jonah 2:9
"But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD."
From the fish's belly, Jonah vows: "I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving." Thanks can rise even from dark places.
11. Ezra 3:11
"And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid."
When the temple foundation was laid, they sang by course, giving thanks: "for he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever."
12. Psalms 26:7
"That I may publish with the voice of thanksgiving, and tell of all thy wondrous works."
David wants to publish with the voice of thanksgiving and tell of God's wondrous works—thanks that becomes a story others hear.
A short prayer
Father, You crown the year with goodness. Forgive me when I enjoy the gift and forget the Giver. Teach me to bless You when I am full, to offer thanksgiving as worship, and to tell of Your wondrous works this season. In Jesus' name, amen.
