Bible Verses for Thank-You Cards: 12 Short KJV Scriptures and a Card Idea for Each

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

Good Bible verses for a thank-you card are short and personal. Paul's letters are full of them: "I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all" (Romans 1:8) and "Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers" (Ephesians 1:16). For a gift or a kind act, try "the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt... with me" (Ruth 1:8), or "they have refreshed my spirit" (1 Corinthians 16:18).

A handwritten thank-you note still means a lot, whether it is for a wedding gift, a baby shower, a meal during a hard week, a teacher's patience, a pastor's care or a friend who simply showed up. Adding a Bible verse turns a polite note into a blessing. Many of the best thank-you verses come from the apostle Paul, who began most of his letters by thanking God for the people he was writing to. These twelve King James verses are short enough to fit in a card. Each comes with a simple card idea you can copy or adapt. Thank the person specifically, name what they did and how it helped, add a verse, and sign with love. For thanking God Himself, see Bible verses about being thankful and Thanksgiving.

Thankful for you: friends, family and mentors

1. Romans 1:8

"First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world."
Romans 1:8 (KJV)

Paul opened his letter to the Christians in Rome, people he had never met, with thanks: I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all. Notice that he thanks God for them. That is a lovely way to word a card, because it tells the person they are a gift from God to you. Card idea: I thank God for you. Your faith and kindness have been such an encouragement to me.

2. 2 Timothy 1:3

"I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;"
2 Timothy 1:3 (KJV)

In his last letter, Paul told Timothy, without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day. It is a warm verse for a mentor, a godchild, a former student or anyone you pray for regularly. Card idea: Thank you for everything you have poured into me. I remember you in my prayers, and I always will. It also works in reverse, from a mentor to the one they have mentored.

3. 1 Thessalonians 3:9

"For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes before our God;"
1 Thessalonians 3:9 (KJV)

Paul had been worried about the young church in Thessalonica until Timothy brought good news about their faith and love. He wrote, what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy wherewith we joy for your sakes. In other words: we cannot thank God enough for you. Card idea: I don't know how to thank God enough for you. You bring us so much joy. It is perfect for a parent, grandparent or lifelong friend.

4. Ephesians 1:16

"Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers;"
Ephesians 1:16 (KJV)

Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers. Paul's thanks led straight into prayer for the Ephesians to know God better. When you thank someone, you can tell them you are praying for them too. Card idea: Thank you for being such a blessing. I keep thanking God for you, and I'm praying for you this week. Then pray for them when you seal the envelope.

Thanks for gifts, help and kindness

5. Ruth 1:8

"And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, Go, return each to her mother's house: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me."
Ruth 1:8 (KJV)

Naomi said this to her two widowed daughters-in-law, who had been kind to her and to her late sons: the LORD deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. It is a beautiful way to ask God to repay someone's kindness. Card idea: You have been so kind to our family. May the LORD deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with us. It is especially fitting after someone helped during a loss.

6. 2 Samuel 2:6

"And now the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing."
2 Samuel 2:6 (KJV)

After the men of Jabesh-gilead risked their lives to give King Saul an honorable burial, David sent them this message: the LORD shew kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness. Requite means repay. David blessed them and promised to return the favor. Card idea: Thank you for what you did. May the LORD show you kindness and truth, and I hope I can return the kindness someday.

7. Philippians 4:14

"Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction."
Philippians 4:14 (KJV)

The church in Philippi sent Paul a gift while he was in prison. He replied, ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction. Communicate here means share. They shared in his hard season by giving. Card idea: Thank you for the gift. You have done a beautiful thing, and it meant so much in this hard season. It suits thanks for meals, financial help or care packages.

8. 1 Corinthians 16:18

"For they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such."
1 Corinthians 16:18 (KJV)

Three men from Corinth visited Paul, and he wrote, they have refreshed my spirit and yours: therefore acknowledge ye them that are such. Some people simply refresh us, and Paul says to recognize them. Card idea: Thank you for the visit, the laughs and the coffee. You always refresh my spirit. This verse also makes a lovely note for a volunteer, a host or a teacher.

Thanks for showing up in hard times

9. Philippians 4:10

"But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity."
Philippians 4:10 (KJV)

Paul wrote this when the Philippians' gift arrived after a long gap: your care of me hath flourished again. He adds generously that they had wanted to help all along but lacked opportunity. Card idea: Thank you for thinking of me. Your care means more than you know. It is a gracious verse to send to someone who reached out after a long silence.

10. 2 Timothy 1:17

"But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me."
2 Timothy 1:17 (KJV)

When Paul was a prisoner in Rome, a man named Onesiphorus sought me out very diligently, and found me. Others had deserted Paul (2 Timothy 1:15), but this friend kept looking until he found him. Card idea: Thank you for showing up and for not giving up on me. I won't forget it. It is a great verse for someone who visited you in the hospital, sat with you in grief or tracked you down when you were struggling.

11. Romans 16:4

"Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles."
Romans 16:4 (KJV)

Priscilla and Aquila were a married couple who worked alongside Paul. He says they laid down their own necks for his life, risking everything for him, and that he and the churches gave thanks for them. Card idea: Thank you for going above and beyond for us. We give thanks for you. Use it for someone who took a real risk or sacrifice for you: a nurse, a firefighter, a foster parent, a mentor.

12. 1 Samuel 25:6

"And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast."
1 Samuel 25:6 (KJV)

David sent this greeting to a wealthy man named Nabal: Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast. Nabal, sadly, answered rudely, but the blessing itself is a beautiful way to close a note to a generous host or family. Card idea: Thank you for opening your home to us. Peace be to you, and peace be to your house.

A short prayer

Lord, thank You for the people You have put in my life: friends, family, mentors and neighbors who have shown me kindness. Help me notice what they do and take time to say thank you. As I write, let my words be a blessing to them. Deal kindly with them as they have dealt with me, refresh their spirits as they have refreshed mine, and give them Your peace in their homes. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good Bible verse for a thank-you card?

Short verses that thank God for the person work best, such as "I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all" (Romans 1:8) or "Cease not to give thanks for you" (Ephesians 1:16). Philippians 1:3 is also a favorite: "I thank my God upon every remembrance of you" (Philippians 1:3). For a kind deed, Ruth 1:8 or 1 Corinthians 16:18 fit beautifully.

What should I write in a Christian thank-you card?

Be specific: name the gift or act, say how it helped or what it meant, add a short verse, and close with a blessing or prayer. For example: Thank you for the meals you brought after the surgery. You refreshed our spirits. We thank God for you. Then add 1 Corinthians 16:18. Keep it short; a few sincere lines are better than a long, generic message.

What Bible verse can I use to thank a pastor, teacher or volunteer?

For a pastor, try Hebrews 6:10, "God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love" (Hebrews 6:10), or Philippians 1:3. For a teacher or mentor, 2 Timothy 1:3 works well. For volunteers, 1 Corinthians 16:18 thanks people who "refreshed my spirit". See Bible verses for pastor appreciation and teachers.

Did Jesus teach about saying thank you?

Yes. When Jesus healed ten men of leprosy, only one came back to thank Him, and Jesus asked, "Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?" (Luke 17:17). Paul also told believers, "In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Saying thank you to people and to God is part of a grateful, Christlike life. See gratitude.
