The Bible honors loyal friendship: "A friend loveth at all times" (Proverbs 17:17), "a man that hath friends must shew himself friendly" (Proverbs 18:24), and Jesus calls laying down one's life for friends the greatest love (John 15:13). Two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10), and iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17).
Scripture treats friendship as a gift and a responsibility: loyalty in hard times, honesty that sharpens character, and love that gives of itself. These twelve King James passages are grouped by what they teach.
Loyal friends in hard times
1. Proverbs 17:17
"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity."
A true friend stays when life is easy and when it is not. The proverb pairs friendship with kinship: brothers are for adversity, and friends love "at all times."
2. Proverbs 18:24
"A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother."
Friendship is two-way. The KJV stresses that having friends requires being friendly, and that some friendships become closer than family.
3. Job 6:14
"To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend; but he forsaketh the fear of the Almighty."
Job, in deep suffering, names what a friend owes the afflicted: pity (kindness). Friendship is tested when someone is hurting.
4. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
"Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up."
Companionship multiplies work and provides help when one falls. Isolation leaves a person with no one to lift them.
Friends who sharpen and refresh
5. Proverbs 27:17
"Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend."
Good friends sharpen each other the way iron sharpens iron: through honest conversation and mutual growth, not flattery alone.
6. Proverbs 27:9
"Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so doth the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel."
Counsel from a close friend is as welcome as fragrance: heartfelt advice refreshes the soul.
7. Proverbs 13:20
"He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed."
The people we walk with shape who we become. Wisdom and folly both spread through companionship.
8. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
"Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do."
Paul urges believers to encourage and build one another up. Friendship in the church includes words that strengthen.
Love that marks true friendship
9. John 15:13
"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."
Jesus sets the highest mark of friendship: laying down one's life. He spoke these words to His disciples the night before the cross.
10. 1 Samuel 18:1
"And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul."
Jonathan's soul was "knit" with David's: a classic Old Testament picture of deep, covenantal friendship.
11. Romans 12:10
"Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;"
Christian friendship is marked by brotherly love and preferring (honoring) one another above yourself.
12. Colossians 3:13
"Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye."
Close relationships need forbearance and forgiveness. Friends who last know how to bear with and forgive each other.
A short prayer
Lord, thank You for the friends You have given me. Make me loyal in hard times, honest enough to sharpen others, and quick to forgive. Teach me to love as Jesus loved His friends. In His name, amen.
