In the Bible loyalty is faithful love that stays. Ittai told King David, "in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be" (2 Samuel 15:21). When others walked away from Jesus, Peter answered, "Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life" (John 6:68).
Loyalty is rarer than it should be. Friends drift, promises get broken, and people switch sides when it becomes convenient. The Old Testament has a rich Hebrew word for the opposite, chesed, which the King James Version translates as mercy, kindness or lovingkindness, and which many scholars render loyal love or steadfast love. It describes love that keeps its commitments. People look up Bible verses about loyalty after a betrayal, when they are deciding whether to stand by a friend, in marriage or dating, at work, or when their own loyalty to God feels thin. These twelve King James verses tell the stories of loyal friends, call us to stay loyal to God, and show what loyalty looks like when it costs something. For being trustworthy, see being faithful; for good friends, see friendship.
Loyal friends in the Bible
1. 1 Samuel 18:3
"Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul."
Jonathan was the son of King Saul and the natural heir to the throne, yet he bound himself in covenant to David, the man God had chosen to be king instead. His loyalty cost him his father's favour and, in a sense, his own crown. Years later David honoured that covenant by caring for Jonathan's son Mephibosheth (2 Samuel 9). Loyalty kept is remembered for generations.
2. 2 Samuel 15:21
"And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be."
Ittai was a Philistine from Gath who had only just arrived in Israel when David's son Absalom rebelled and David fled Jerusalem. David told him to go back, because he was "a stranger, and also an exile" (2 Samuel 15:19). Ittai refused. He chose to stand with the king on his worst day, whether in death or life. Loyalty shows its worth when the other person has nothing to give you.
3. 2 Kings 2:2
"And Elijah said unto Elisha, Tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Beth-el. And Elisha said unto him, As the LORD liveth, and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they went down to Beth-el."
Elijah tried three times to leave Elisha behind, at Gilgal, Bethel and Jericho, and three times Elisha answered with the same oath: I will not leave thee (2 Kings 2:2, 4, 6). He stayed to the very end, and he was there to receive Elijah's mantle. Some blessings come only to those who stay. See discipleship.
4. Ruth 2:11
"And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore."
Boaz had heard all about Ruth's loyalty to her widowed mother-in-law Naomi. Ruth had left her own parents and homeland, as she had promised: "whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge" (Ruth 1:16). Loyalty is often noticed long before it is rewarded. Ruth became the great-grandmother of King David.
Staying loyal to God
5. John 6:67
"Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?"
After a hard teaching, "many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him" (John 6:66). Jesus did not chase the crowd or soften His words. He turned to the Twelve and asked, Will ye also go away? Loyalty to Jesus is tested when following Him is not popular, comfortable or easy to explain.
6. John 6:68
"Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life."
Peter's answer is one of the most honest confessions in the Gospels. He does not claim to understand everything; he simply knows there is nowhere better to go. Thou hast the words of eternal life. Sometimes loyalty to God sounds less like certainty and more like this: I do not have all the answers, but I know who does.
7. Hosea 6:4
"O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the early dew it goeth away."
Through Hosea, God grieves over His people's love that vanishes like morning mist. The word translated goodness is chesed, loyal love. Their devotion was real for a moment and then gone by noon. The verse is a gentle mirror: is my loyalty to God steady, or does it come and go with my mood? See relationship with God.
8. Psalms 78:37
"For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant."
Psalm 78 retells Israel's history so the next generation would not repeat it. God's people kept making promises in a crisis and breaking them once it passed. Stedfast is the key word: loyalty is not intensity in one moment but faithfulness over time. The same psalm says that God, being full of compassion, "forgave their iniquity" (Psalm 78:38).
Loyalty when it costs
9. Psalms 15:4
"In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not."
Psalm 15 describes the person who may dwell with God. One mark is that he sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not: he keeps his word even after it becomes costly. Loyalty is not only to people but to promises. It means showing up for the commitment you made last month even when something better has come along. See integrity.
10. Proverbs 27:10
"Thine own friend, and thy father's friend, forsake not; neither go into thy brother's house in the day of thy calamity: for better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off."
Do not abandon old friendships, even your parents' friends. In a crisis, better is a neighbour that is near than a brother far off. This proverb honours the long, quiet loyalty of family friends, neighbours and church members who have known you for decades. Call one of them this week.
11. 2 Timothy 1:16
"The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain:"
Paul wrote from a Roman prison, near the end of his life, and he was honest that "all they which are in Asia be turned away from me" (2 Timothy 1:15). Then he names one man who did not: Onesiphorus, who was not ashamed of my chain, and who searched Rome until he found him. Loyalty means visiting the friend in hospital, in prison or in disgrace.
12. Ruth 3:10
"And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich."
Boaz again praises Ruth's kindness, the Hebrew chesed, loyal love. Her latter kindness was greater than her first: she could have looked for a younger husband for herself, but she chose a path that would also protect Naomi's family line. True loyalty thinks about the good of the people we love, not only our own. See helping other people.
A short prayer
Faithful God, thank You that Your love never wanders off like morning mist. Make me a loyal friend, a faithful spouse or family member, and a person who keeps my word even when it costs me. Where my loyalty to You has been thin, draw me back, and let me say with Peter, Lord, to whom else would I go? Give me wisdom to tell loyalty from covering up wrong, and courage to stand with others on their worst days. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about loyalty?
Scripture praises loyalty as a form of love. Proverbs says "A friend loveth at all times" (Proverbs 17:17) and asks, "a faithful man who can find?" (Proverbs 20:6). It tells the stories of loyal people like Jonathan, Ruth, Ittai, Elisha and Onesiphorus, and above all it describes God's own chesed, His loyal, covenant love. Loyalty to God comes first; loyalty to people flows from it.
Is loyalty the same as faithfulness?
They overlap. Faithfulness is being reliable and true over time; loyalty adds the idea of standing with someone, especially under pressure or when others leave. Both describe God's character before they describe ours. For more, see being faithful and the faithfulness of God.
What does the Bible say about loyalty in marriage and relationships?
Marriage is described as a covenant, and God calls the spouse "the wife of thy covenant" (Malachi 2:14). Loyalty in love means keeping your promises, protecting each other's reputation and refusing to let anyone else take your partner's place. Proverbs puts it this way: "Let not mercy and truth forsake thee" (Proverbs 3:3). See married couples and love and relationships.
What if a friend was disloyal to me, or I was disloyal?
Peter promised Jesus, "Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee" (Matthew 26:35), and hours later "all the disciples forsook him, and fled" (Matthew 26:56). Jesus restored Peter anyway (John 21:15-17). Disloyalty hurts deeply, and forgiveness does not always mean instant trust, but restoration is possible. See betrayal.
Loyalty never requires keeping quiet about abuse or crime. If someone uses loyalty to pressure you into silence, in the US you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, or 911 in an emergency.
