God asks His people to be faithful: "it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful" (1 Corinthians 4:2). Jesus promises the faithful servant, "Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things" (Matthew 25:23), and He says, "be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life" (Revelation 2:10).
Being faithful means being trustworthy and steady: keeping your word, doing your part and staying loyal to God when it costs you. It is our answer to God's faithfulness to us, which you can read about on the faithfulness of God. These twelve King James verses show what God asks, the faithful servants He praised, and what faithfulness looks like at home, at work and to the end. They make a good focus for a new year, when small daily habits matter more than big resolutions.
Found faithful: what God asks of us
1. 1 Corinthians 4:2
"Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful."
A steward manages what belongs to someone else. Paul says the one requirement is faithfulness, not fame or talent. Our time, money, gifts and the gospel itself are all entrusted to us. See finances.
2. Matthew 25:23
"His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."
In the parable of the talents, the servant who was given two talents hears the same praise as the one given five. God rewards faithfulness, not the size of the starting gift.
3. Luke 12:42
"And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?"
Jesus describes a faithful and wise steward who feeds the household in due season. Faithfulness is often ordinary: showing up on time with what people need.
4. Proverbs 20:6
"Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?"
Many people talk about their own goodness, but a faithful person is rare. Faithfulness is proved by what we do over time, not by what we say about ourselves.
Faithful servants in Scripture
5. Nehemiah 9:8
"And foundest his heart faithful before thee, and madest a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Jebusites, and the Girgashites, to give it, I say, to his seed, and hast performed thy words; for thou art righteous:"
The Levites remembered that God found Abraham's heart faithful and kept His covenant with him. Faithfulness begins in the heart, as a response to God's promises.
6. Hebrews 3:5
"And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;"
Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant (Numbers 12:7). Hebrews then points to Jesus, who is faithful as a Son over His own house (Hebrews 3:6).
7. Nehemiah 7:2
"That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many."
Nehemiah put Hananiah in charge of Jerusalem because he was a faithful man who feared God above many. Leaders still look for this quality before skill. See leadership.
8. Colossians 1:7
"As ye also learned of Epaphras our dear fellowservant, who is for you a faithful minister of Christ;"
Epaphras is barely known, yet Paul calls him a dear fellowservant and a faithful minister of Christ. Colossians 4:12 adds that he was always labouring fervently for the church in prayer.
Faithful in everyday life and to the end
9. 3 John 1:5
"Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers;"
Gaius was faithful in hospitality, caring for traveling believers he had never met. Faithfulness includes the small, practical kindness of welcoming people.
10. Proverbs 25:13
"As the cold of snow in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger to them that send him: for he refresheth the soul of his masters."
A faithful messenger refreshes those who send him, like snow cooling the heat of harvest. Doing what you said you would do is a gift to everyone who depends on you.
11. Proverbs 28:20
"A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent."
A faithful person shall abound with blessings, but the rush to get rich leads into sin. Steady faithfulness beats shortcuts in work, money and character.
12. Revelation 2:10
"Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life."
Jesus spoke these words to a suffering church in Smyrna. He did not promise an easy road, but a crown of life for those who stay faithful to the end. See persecution.
A short prayer
Faithful God, thank You that You keep every promise. Make me faithful in little things: my words, my work, my home and my prayers. When I am tempted to quit or take shortcuts, help me remember the crown of life and the joy of hearing, Well done. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to be faithful to God?
To be faithful is to be full of faith and worthy of trust. Toward God it means trusting Him, obeying Him and staying loyal over time. Proverbs 3:3 pictures it as binding mercy and truth around your neck, and you are to "write them upon the table of thine heart" (Proverbs 3:3).
What does the Bible say about being faithful in small things?
Jesus said, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much" (Luke 16:10). Daily Bible reading, honest work and kept promises are small things that build a faithful life, and Matthew 25:23 shows that God notices them.
What does the Bible say about being faithful in marriage?
Faithfulness in marriage is a covenant promise. Malachi 2:15 warns, "let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth" (Malachi 2:15), and Hebrews 13:4 calls marriage honourable. See love and marriage for more.
Is being faithful the same as God's faithfulness?
They are related but different. God's faithfulness is perfect and never fails: "If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful" (2 Timothy 2:13). Our faithfulness is imperfect and grows as we rely on His. Faithfulness is also part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). For keeping confidences, see gossip.
