Teaching is a gift God gives (Romans 12:7; Ephesians 4:11) and a serious calling: "be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation" (James 3:1). Teachers are told, "Study to shew thyself approved unto God" (2 Timothy 2:15), and to work "heartily, as to the Lord" (Colossians 3:23). "They that be wise shall shine" (Daniel 12:3).
Whether you teach Sunday school, lead a Bible study, homeschool, or stand in front of a public-school classroom, these twelve King James passages speak to the calling and weight of teaching, and offer encouragement for tired teachers. This page is for and about teachers; for gaining wisdom in general, see wisdom, and for raising children at home, see parenting. These verses also work well in Teacher Appreciation Week cards.
A gift and a serious calling
1. James 3:1
"My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation."
In the KJV, "masters" translates the Greek word for teachers. James is not discouraging teaching; he is reminding teachers that influence brings accountability.
2. Romans 12:6-7
"Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;"
Teaching is listed among the grace-gifts. If God has given you this gift, Paul's counsel is simple: give yourself to it, "he that teacheth, on teaching."
3. Ephesians 4:11-12
"And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:"
Christ gives pastors and teachers to the church to equip the saints and build up the body. Teaching is for others' growth, not the teacher's platform.
4. 2 Timothy 2:15
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Rightly dividing the word of truth takes study. Faithful preparation is part of a Bible teacher's worship.
Teaching faithfully
5. 2 Timothy 2:2
"And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."
Four generations in one verse: Paul, Timothy, faithful men, and others also. Good teachers multiply teachers.
6. Titus 2:7
"In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,"
Students learn as much from a teacher's life as from the lesson. Paul tells Titus to be a pattern of good works, with integrity in what he teaches.
7. Proverbs 9:9
"Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning."
Teachable people grow. This proverb encourages teachers that instruction given to a willing heart bears fruit, and it reminds teachers to keep learning too.
8. Matthew 28:19-20
"Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
The Great Commission is a teaching commission: making disciples includes "Teaching them to observe all things" Jesus commanded. And He promises to be with those who teach.
Encouragement for teachers
9. Colossians 3:23-24
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ."
Grading late at night or preparing a lesson no one notices: it is done for the Lord, and He rewards it.
10. Daniel 12:3
"And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever."
Those who are wise and turn many to righteousness shine like the stars. Teachers who point students toward God leave a light that lasts.
11. Psalms 32:8
"I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye."
God Himself is the first Teacher: "I will instruct thee and teach thee." Every teacher can lean on the Lord's guidance for every class.
12. 1 Corinthians 15:58
"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
When results feel invisible, this promise stands: labour in the Lord is not in vain.
A short prayer
Lord, thank You for the gift and calling to teach. Give me patience with every student, wisdom in every lesson, and integrity in how I live. When I feel unseen or weary, remind me that I serve You and that my labor is not in vain. Teach me, so I can teach others. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about teachers?
Teaching is a gift from God (Romans 12:6-7; Ephesians 4:11-12) that carries real accountability (James 3:1). Teachers are to study carefully (2 Timothy 2:15), live as an example (Titus 2:7), and pass the truth on to others (2 Timothy 2:2).
What does James 3:1 mean for teachers?
In the KJV, "masters" means teachers. James warns that teachers will be judged more strictly because their words shape others. It is a call to humility and care, not a reason to avoid teaching.
What is a good Bible verse for a teacher appreciation card?
Colossians 3:23, Daniel 12:3 and 1 Corinthians 15:58 are popular choices. They honor the teacher's hard work and remind them it is not in vain.
Is Jesus called a teacher in the Bible?
Yes. In the KJV He is often called "Master," meaning Teacher. He said, "Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am" (John 13:13).
