The Bible uses a nurse as a picture of gentle love: "we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children" (1 Thessalonians 2:7). The Good Samaritan "bound up his wounds" and "took care of him" (Luke 10:34), and God promises He will not forget "your work and labour of love" (Hebrews 6:10).
Nurses spend long shifts caring for people at their most frightened and fragile. People search for Bible verses about nurses for nursing school graduations and pinning ceremonies, for Nurses Week (May 6 to 12), for thank-you cards after a hospital stay, for Christmas cards to the night-shift team, or for strength on a hard day at work. These twelve King James verses describe the gentle, compassionate care nurses give, offer strength for long and tiring shifts, and bless those who care for the sick. For health and the body, see health; for work in general, see work.
Gentle hands and a caring heart
1. 1 Thessalonians 2:7
"But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children:"
Paul compares his care for a young church to a nurse who cherishes her children, warmly and tenderly. In his day a nurse usually meant a nursing mother or nanny, but the picture fits every nurse who treats patients with gentleness and patience.
2. Luke 10:33-34
"But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him."
The Samaritan saw the injured man, had compassion, went to him, bound up his wounds with what he had (oil and wine), moved him to safety and arranged further care. It is a step-by-step picture of nursing, and Jesus ends the story with Go, and do thou likewise (Luke 10:37). See loving thy neighbor.
3. Mark 1:31
"And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them."
Jesus took Peter's mother-in-law by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her. A hand that steadies and lifts is often the first comfort a patient feels. Once she recovered, she served others in turn.
4. Exodus 1:17
"But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive."
Shiphrah and Puah (Exodus 1:15), Hebrew midwives, refused Pharaoh's order to kill newborn boys. They are among the first healthcare workers named in the Bible, and they risked their lives to protect their patients. Conscience and courage belong at the bedside too. See courage.
Strength for long shifts
5. Isaiah 33:2
"O LORD, be gracious unto us; we have waited for thee: be thou their arm every morning, our salvation also in the time of trouble."
Be thou their arm every morning is a perfect prayer before a shift: Lord, be my strength today. The verse continues, our salvation also in the time of trouble, for the moment an emergency comes.
6. Psalms 68:19
"Blessed be the Lord, who daily loadeth us with benefits, even the God of our salvation. Selah."
God daily loadeth us with benefits. On hard shifts it helps to look for the daily mercies: a patient who improved, a kind coworker, a quiet moment to breathe. Gratitude refuels tired caregivers. See gratitude.
7. Psalms 86:16
"O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid."
Give thy strength unto thy servant is a short prayer for a twelve-hour shift, a night shift or a code. Nurses serve, and God gives strength to those who serve.
8. Colossians 1:29
"Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily."
Paul worked hard, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily. Nursing is hard labour, and Christians can do it in God's strength instead of running on empty. See working hard.
A blessing for those who care for the sick
9. Hebrews 6:10
"For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have shewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minister."
Patients forget names, charts close and shifts blur together, but God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love. Every act of care done in His name is remembered by Him.
10. Exodus 1:20-21
"Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses."
Because the midwives feared God, God dealt well with them and made them houses, that is, He blessed their families. God sees and honours those who protect life.
11. Psalms 41:1
"Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the LORD will deliver him in time of trouble."
Blessed is he that considereth the poor, the weak and helpless. The following verses promise the LORD's care in sickness (Psalm 41:3). Those who care for the weak are themselves under God's care.
12. Matthew 10:42
"And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward."
Even a cup of cold water given in Jesus' name will not lose its reward. Small acts such as a warm blanket, ice chips or a few kind words at 3 a.m. matter to God.
A short prayer
Lord, thank You for nurses who care for the sick with gentle hands and brave hearts. Be their arm every morning and their strength through every night shift. Give them wisdom, steady hands and compassion that does not run dry. Protect them, refresh them when they are weary, and remind them that You do not forget their labour of love. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Bible verse for a nurse graduation or pinning ceremony?
Popular choices include "even as a nurse cherisheth her children" (1 Thessalonians 2:7), "Go, and do thou likewise" (Luke 10:37) and "God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love" (Hebrews 6:10). Many graduates also choose "Here am I; send me" (Isaiah 6:8). For a card, add a line such as We are so proud of you and praying for you in your new calling.
Are there nurses in the Bible?
Yes. Rebekah's nurse Deborah was so loved that the oak where she was buried was named Allon-bachuth, which means oak of weeping (Genesis 35:8). Naomi became nurse to her grandson Obed (Ruth 4:16), and the midwives Shiphrah and Puah protected newborns (Exodus 1:15-17). The word usually meant a nanny or nursing mother, but caring for the sick runs all through Scripture, from the Good Samaritan to Jesus healing the sick.
What is a good Bible verse for a nurse having a hard day?
Short prayers you can say between patients include "be thou their arm every morning" (Isaiah 33:2) and "give thy strength unto thy servant" (Psalm 86:16). Jesus also invites the weary to come to Him for rest (Matthew 11:28). If a shift was traumatic, talking with a chaplain, a trusted colleague or a counselor is wise, not weak. See stress.
What does the Bible say about caring for the sick?
Jesus counts care for the sick as care for Him: "I was sick, and ye visited me" (Matthew 25:36), and "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40). James tells churches to pray for the sick (James 5:14). Caring for patients is one of the most Christlike kinds of work there is. See helping other people.
Nurses face real burnout and trauma. If work stress has left you hopeless or thinking about harming yourself, please reach out: in the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency. Asking for help is wise care, not weak faith.
