"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth" (3 John 1:2). "Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost" (1 Corinthians 6:19). "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine" (Proverbs 17:22). "So he giveth his beloved sleep" (Psalm 127:2).
Health is a gift, and Scripture treats the body with respect: it is God's design, a temple of the Holy Spirit, and something to care for with gratitude. These twelve King James passages are about everyday stewardship of health: honoring God with your body, the wisdom of rest, a cheerful heart and kind words, and the goodness of doctors and medicine. They are not promises of perfect health or a substitute for treatment. If you or someone you love is sick and praying for recovery, see our Bible verses about healing.
Your body, God's temple
1. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
"What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's."
Your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, and you were bought with a price. Paul first applies this to sexual purity, but the principle reaches further: the body is not a throwaway shell. Caring for it is a way of glorifying God.
2. Romans 12:1
"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service."
Present your bodies a living sacrifice. Worship is not only singing on Sunday; it includes how we use our bodies every day. Rest, nourishment, and self-control can all be offered to God.
3. 1 Corinthians 10:31
"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."
Whether ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. This verse invites gratitude and moderation rather than guilt or obsession.
4. 1 Timothy 4:8
"For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come."
Bodily exercise profiteth little, but godliness is profitable unto all things. Paul does not dismiss exercise; he says it has some value. He simply keeps it in its place: godliness lasts into eternity.
Wisdom for a healthy life
5. 3 John 1:2
"Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth."
John wishes his friend Gaius good health, even as his soul prospers. It is a warm, normal prayer for physical wellbeing, and it shows that caring about health and caring about the soul belong together.
6. Proverbs 3:7-8
"Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones."
Fear the LORD and depart from evil; it shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones. Proverbs observes that a life of humble obedience tends toward wholeness, a general wisdom pattern rather than a guarantee.
7. Proverbs 14:30
"A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones."
A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones. Proverbs links inner peace with bodily wellbeing, and warns that envy and bitterness eat away at a person.
8. Psalms 127:2
"It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep."
It is vain to rise early and sit up late, eating the bread of sorrows: he giveth his beloved sleep. Endless overwork is not faithfulness. Rest is a gift from God, and receiving it is an act of trust.
A cheerful heart and wise care
9. Proverbs 17:22
"A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones."
A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones. Joy, laughter, and hope are good for the whole person. It does not shame the sad, but invites us to seek joy in God.
10. Proverbs 16:24
"Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones."
Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. Words matter for wellbeing. Speaking kindly to others, and to yourself, can be part of caring for health.
11. Luke 5:31
"And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick."
Jesus said that the healthy do not need a physician, but the sick do. He was speaking about sinners needing a Savior, yet He used the doctor as a natural example: when you are sick, you go to the physician.
12. Colossians 4:14
"Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas, greet you."
Luke, the beloved physician. One of the Gospel writers was a doctor, and Paul calls him beloved. Medicine and faith are not enemies. Seeing a doctor is wise stewardship, not a lack of faith.
A short prayer
Lord, thank You for the body You have given me. Help me care for it as Your temple: to rest, eat with gratitude, and give You glory in all I do. Bless the doctors and nurses who care for us, and keep me in health as my soul prospers. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about health?
The Bible treats health as a gift and the body as a temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). John prays for good health (3 John 1:2), Proverbs links a merry heart and wise living with wellbeing (Proverbs 17:22; 3:7-8), and rest is God's gift (Psalm 127:2).
Is it a lack of faith to see a doctor?
No. Luke was "the beloved physician" (Colossians 4:14), and Jesus spoke of the sick needing a physician (Luke 5:31). Praying and seeing a doctor go together. Please follow qualified medical advice for any health concern.
Does the Bible promise good health?
Scripture does not promise that faithful believers will never be sick. Proverbs describes general patterns, and 3 John 1:2 is a prayer, not a guarantee. God's presence is promised in sickness and in health.
How is this different from verses about healing?
This page is about everyday stewardship of the body. Our healing page gathers verses to pray when you or a loved one is sick and asking God for recovery.
This page is for spiritual encouragement and is not medical advice. Scripture does not replace professional care: please see a doctor or other qualified health professional about any symptoms, diagnosis, or treatment, and seek emergency help (911 in the US) if you are in danger.
