Bible Verses About Eternal Life: 12 KJV Scriptures on Life That Begins Now and Never Ends

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

Eternal life is the life of God given to those who believe in Jesus, beginning now and lasting for ever. Jesus said, "He that believeth on me hath everlasting life" (John 6:47), and Paul says Christ "hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel" (2 Timothy 1:10). It is a gift of grace, not a reward for good works (Titus 3:7).

Most people wonder at some point what happens after death, and whether there is more to life than the years we can count. The Bible's answer is eternal life: not just endless time, but a new quality of life with God that starts the moment someone trusts Jesus and continues through death into resurrection. People look up eternal life verses after a funeral, for an evangelism conversation, when they doubt whether they are really saved, or when a child asks where Grandma is now. These twelve King James verses explain what eternal life is, how it is received, and how it shapes the way we live. For our future home, see heaven; for being saved, see salvation.

What eternal life is

1. John 3:15

"That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life."
John 3:15 (KJV)

This is the verse just before the famous John 3:16. Jesus has been comparing Himself to the bronze serpent that Moses lifted up in the wilderness, so that anyone bitten could look and live (Numbers 21:8-9). In the same way the Son of Man would be lifted up on the cross, and whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. The next verse explains why: "For God so loved the world" (John 3:16).

2. John 3:36

"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."
John 3:36 (KJV)

Notice the tense: hath everlasting life. Eternal life is not only a future hope but a present possession for those who believe. The verse is also sober. John does not pretend the choice is unimportant; refusing the Son means not seeing life. The Gospel of John speaks of eternal life more than any other book in the Bible, and again and again it ties it to believing in Jesus.

3. John 6:47

"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life."
John 6:47 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words after feeding the five thousand, when crowds followed Him hoping for more free bread. He offered Himself instead, the true bread from heaven. Verily, verily signals a solemn statement. The promise is as simple as it gets: believe, and you have it. In the same chapter Peter says, "thou hast the words of eternal life" (John 6:68).

4. 2 Timothy 1:9-10

"Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began, But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:"
2 Timothy 1:9-10 (KJV)

Paul wrote this from prison in Rome, expecting to be executed. God saved us, he says, not according to our works, by a grace planned before the world began. He was not whistling in the dark. He says Jesus has abolished death, made it powerless to have the last word, and brought life and immortality to light. What was dim in the Old Testament is now clear because of the resurrection. A man facing death could write about life.

A gift of grace

5. Titus 3:7

"That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."
Titus 3:7 (KJV)

This verse comes at the end of one of Paul's clearest summaries of the gospel: God saved us "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy" (Titus 3:5). Justified by grace, believers become heirs: eternal life is an inheritance waiting for God's children, as certain as the Father who promised it. See grace.

6. Romans 5:21

"That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord."
Romans 5:21 (KJV)

Paul describes two kings. Sin has reigned, and its rule ends in death. But grace now reigns, through righteousness unto eternal life. The trade is not fair: we bring sin and receive life. Paul says the same a chapter later: "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23). See righteousness.

7. John 6:40

"And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day."
John 6:40 (KJV)

Jesus says plainly what the Father wants: that everyone who looks to the Son and believes would have everlasting life. Eternal life is not a reward God reluctantly hands out to a few spiritual achievers; it is His will. And Jesus adds a promise for the body: I will raise him up at the last day. Christian hope includes the resurrection, not just a soul floating away.

8. 1 Timothy 1:16

"Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting."
1 Timothy 1:16 (KJV)

Paul calls himself the chief of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15): he had once hunted down Christians. If God could show mercy to him, Paul says, then he is a pattern, an example for everyone who would later believe. No one is too far gone to receive eternal life. If you think you have done too much, Paul's story was written for you.

Living now in the light of forever

9. Matthew 19:16

"And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?"
Matthew 19:16 (KJV)

A rich young man asks Jesus what good deed will earn eternal life. Jesus exposes the one thing he loves more than God, his wealth, and the man walks away sad (Matthew 19:22). Then Jesus tells His disciples that salvation is impossible for people, but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Eternal life cannot be bought or earned; it is received by following Jesus.

10. Galatians 6:8

"For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting."
Galatians 6:8 (KJV)

Paul uses a farming picture. Whatever you sow, you reap. A life spent feeding selfish desires produces decay; a life invested in what the Spirit loves produces life everlasting. This does not mean earning salvation. It means that the choices of believers matter, and that eternity is already being shaped by how we spend our time, money and attention today.

11. Daniel 12:2

"And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt."
Daniel 12:2 (KJV)

This is one of the clearest Old Testament promises of resurrection. Daniel was told that many who sleep in the dust will awake, some to everlasting life. The Bible speaks of death as sleep for those who belong to God, because they will wake. Jesus picked up the same language when He said, "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth" (John 11:11).

12. 1 Corinthians 15:53

"For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality."
1 Corinthians 15:53 (KJV)

In the Bible's great chapter on resurrection, Paul says our bodies will be changed: this mortal must put on immortality, like putting on a new set of clothes. Eternal life is not an escape from the body but its transformation. The chapter ends with practical encouragement: because of this hope, our "labour is not in vain in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 15:58).

A short prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of eternal life. I cannot earn it, and I do not have to. I believe in You, and I trust that You have abolished death and will raise me up at the last day. Help me to live today as someone who will live for ever, investing my time and love in what lasts. Comfort me when I grieve, and give me courage to share this hope with others. In Your name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is eternal life according to the Bible?

Eternal life is life with God that begins when a person trusts Jesus and continues for ever, through death into the resurrection. Jesus defined it in relational terms: "this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). It is not just living longer but living in the presence and love of God.

How do you get eternal life?

By believing in Jesus Christ, trusting Him as the Son of God who died for your sins and rose again. "He that believeth on me hath everlasting life" (John 6:47). It is a gift received, not a wage earned: "the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23). If you want to take that step, tell God so in your own words and talk with a pastor or Christian friend. See salvation.

Can I know for sure that I have eternal life?

Yes. John wrote his first letter so "that ye may know that ye have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). Assurance rests on God's promise in Christ, not on how strong your feelings are on a given day. Doubts are common, especially during hard seasons. Go back to the promises, look at Jesus rather than your performance, and talk honestly with other believers. See doubt.

Is eternal life the same as heaven?

They are closely linked but not identical. Eternal life is the life God gives, beginning now. Heaven is where believers are with Christ after death, and the Bible's final hope is a new heaven and a new earth where God lives with His people in resurrection bodies (Revelation 21:1-3). Christians hold a range of views on the details. See heaven and life.
