Biblical hope is confident expectation in God, not wishful thinking. Key verses: Romans 15:13 (the God of hope fills you with joy and peace), Jeremiah 29:11 (thoughts of peace and an expected end), Hebrews 6:19 (hope as an anchor of the soul), and 1 Peter 1:3 (a living hope through the resurrection).
In Scripture, hope looks forward with trust: God keeps His promises, Christ is risen, and the future is not empty. These twelve King James passages are about that confident expectation—distinct from faith's trust today or encouragement's lift for a weary heart.
The God of hope
1. Romans 15:13
"Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost."
Paul names God "the God of hope" and prays that joy, peace, and believing would make hope overflow by the Holy Ghost's power.
2. Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
Spoken to exiles in Babylon: God's thoughts toward His people are peace and an "expected end"—a future with hope, not abandonment.
3. Psalms 71:5
"For thou art my hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth."
From youth onward, the psalmist's hope has been the Lord. Hope is a lifelong posture, not a last resort.
4. Psalms 39:7
"And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee."
After reflecting on life's brevity, David asks what he waits for—and answers: "my hope is in thee."
Hope as an anchor
5. Hebrews 6:19
"Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;"
Hope is pictured as an anchor for the soul: sure and stedfast, entering into that within the veil. It holds when storms come.
6. Romans 5:5
"And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."
Hope does not make ashamed (disappoint) because God's love is poured into our hearts by the Holy Ghost.
7. Romans 8:24-25
"For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it."
We are saved by hope: hope that is seen is not hope. Waiting with patience is part of hoping for what we do not yet see.
8. Colossians 1:27
"To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:"
Christ in you, "the hope of glory": the core of Christian hope is a Person, not a vague optimism.
A living hope
9. 1 Peter 1:3
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,"
God has begotten us again unto a "lively" (living) hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
10. Lamentations 3:21-24
"This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him."
In the middle of grief, Jeremiah recalls God's mercies and faithfulness: "therefore have I hope." The LORD is his portion.
11. Psalms 31:24
"Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD."
"Be of good courage" is tied to hoping in the LORD: courage grows where hope is placed in Him.
12. Titus 2:13
"Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;"
Believers look for "that blessed hope"—the appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
A short prayer
God of hope, fill me with all joy and peace in believing. When my future feels thin, anchor my soul in Christ, the hope of glory. Teach me to wait with patience and to abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name, amen.
