Bible Verses About False Prophets: 12 KJV Warnings and Tests

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

Jesus said, "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing" (Matthew 7:15), and "Ye shall know them by their fruits" (Matthew 7:16). John commands, "believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God" (1 John 4:1). Peter warns that "there shall be false teachers among you" (2 Peter 2:1).

Scripture is honest that not everyone who speaks in God's name speaks for Him. These twelve King James passages give Jesus' warnings about false prophets, the Bible's tests for any teacher, and the safeguard of knowing the Word for yourself. This is not a call to suspect every pastor, and it names no names; it is a set of biblical tests. For everyday wisdom in telling right from wrong, see discernment; for the standard every message is measured by, see truth.

Jesus' warning

1. Matthew 7:15

"Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."
Matthew 7:15 (KJV)

False prophets rarely look dangerous. Jesus pictures wolves dressed as sheep: friendly, religious, and persuasive on the outside.

2. Matthew 7:16

"Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?"
Matthew 7:16 (KJV)

The test of fruit: over time, a teacher's character, doctrine, and the lives shaped by their message reveal what is inside. Look for the fruit of the Spirit, not just charisma.

3. Matthew 24:11

"And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many."
Matthew 24:11 (KJV)

Jesus expected many false prophets, and that many people would be deceived. Their presence does not mean God has lost control; it means we should stay alert.

4. Matthew 24:24

"For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."
Matthew 24:24 (KJV)

Signs and wonders alone do not prove a message is from God. Jesus warns that false Christs may perform great signs to deceive, so miracles must be weighed by the truth of the gospel.

Test the message

5. 1 John 4:1

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
1 John 4:1 (KJV)

Christians are not to believe every spirit or voice but to test them. Testing is not cynicism; it is obedience.

6. 1 John 4:2-3

"Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world."
1 John 4:2-3 (KJV)

John's first test is about Jesus Himself: does the teaching confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh? A wrong Christ is the root of every false gospel.

7. Deuteronomy 18:22

"When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."
Deuteronomy 18:22 (KJV)

A prophet who spoke in the LORD's name and whose word did not come to pass was exposed as speaking presumptuously. Failed predictions and failed dates are a biblical warning sign.

8. Galatians 1:8

"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed."
Galatians 1:8 (KJV)

Even an angel, or an apostle, preaching another gospel stands under God's curse. The message outranks the messenger, however impressive.

Guarding the church

9. 2 Peter 2:1

"But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction."
2 Peter 2:1 (KJV)

False teachers often arise from within, bringing in destructive heresies quietly ("privily"), even denying the Lord who bought them.

10. 2 Timothy 4:3-4

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."
2 Timothy 4:3-4 (KJV)

Paul foresaw hearers who collect teachers to suit their own desires, "having itching ears," and turn from truth to fables. Guarding against false prophets includes guarding our own appetites.

11. 2 Corinthians 11:13-14

"For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light."
2 Corinthians 11:13-14 (KJV)

False apostles disguise themselves as apostles of Christ, just as Satan masquerades as an angel of light. Appearance is not authority.

12. Acts 17:11

"These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so."
Acts 17:11 (KJV)

The Bereans received Paul's message eagerly and still searched the Scriptures daily to see whether it was so. That is the healthiest defense: know your Bible.

A short prayer

Father, give me a love for Your truth and a heart that tests every message by Your Word. Guard me from voices that flatter or frighten, and keep me humble so I do not judge harshly. Make me like the Bereans, eager to listen and faithful to search the Scriptures. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions

How do you recognize a false prophet according to the Bible?

Scripture gives several tests: their fruit (Matthew 7:16), what they confess about Jesus (1 John 4:2-3), whether their predictions come true (Deuteronomy 18:22), and whether they preach the same gospel the apostles preached (Galatians 1:8).

Do miracles prove someone is from God?

No. Jesus warned that false prophets "shall shew great signs and wonders" (Matthew 24:24). Miracles must be weighed by sound doctrine.

Are there false prophets today?

The New Testament assumes false teachers will keep appearing (2 Peter 2:1; 2 Timothy 4:3-4). The answer is not fear but discernment rooted in Scripture.

Should I call someone a false prophet?

Be careful and humble. Test teaching by Scripture, talk with mature believers or your pastor, and distinguish secondary disagreements from a denial of the gospel.
