Jesus said, "ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John 8:32), and "I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6). He prayed, "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth" (John 17:17). Scripture also calls us to speak truth with our neighbours (Ephesians 4:25) and buy the truth without selling it (Proverbs 23:23).
Truth in the Bible is personal as well as propositional: Jesus is the truth, God's word is truth, and God's people are called to speak it. These twelve King James passages focus on freedom through truth, God's true word, and honest speech—not merely "facts," but reality as God defines it.
The truth that makes free
1. John 8:32
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Jesus ties freedom to knowing truth—not opinion, not spin. In context, continuing in His word is how disciples know it (John 8:31).
2. John 14:6
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
I am the way, the truth, and the life. Truth is not only a set of ideas; it is a Person. Coming to the Father means coming through Him.
3. John 17:17
"Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."
Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Jesus' prayer for His own: God's word sets them apart. Holiness and truth travel together.
4. John 16:13
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come."
When the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth. Believers are not left guessing; the Spirit guides into truth.
God's word is truth
5. Psalms 119:160
"Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever."
Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. Truth is as old as God's first word and as lasting as His judgments.
6. Psalms 51:6
"Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom."
Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts. God wants truth not only on the lips but in the hidden self—honesty before Him.
7. Proverbs 23:23
"Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding."
Buy the truth, and sell it not. Truth is worth costly pursuit and not for sale when pressure comes.
8. 2 Timothy 2:15
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
Study to shew thyself approved unto God... rightly dividing the word of truth. Handle Scripture carefully; truth can be mishandled.
Speak the truth
9. Ephesians 4:25
"Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another."
Putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. In the body of Christ, honesty is loyalty.
10. Zechariah 8:16
"These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates:"
Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace. Truth and peace belong in community life.
11. Proverbs 12:22
"Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight."
Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight. God delights in people who deal truly.
12. 3 John 1:4
"I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth."
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Truth is a path to walk, not only a statement to affirm.
A short prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the truth, and Your word is truth. Free me by the truth; sanctify me through it. Put truth in my inward parts, and help me speak truth with my neighbour. Guide me by Your Spirit into all truth today. In Your name, amen.
