The Bible teaches that lust begins in the heart and the eyes (Matthew 5:27-28; 1 John 2:16) and grows step by step into sin (James 1:14-15). Its answer is practical: flee it (1 Corinthians 6:18; 2 Timothy 2:22), set boundaries for your eyes (Job 31:1), make no provision for the flesh (Romans 13:14), and walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16). God always provides a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Lust is one of the most searched struggles in the Christian life, and Scripture speaks to it with honesty and hope. These twelve King James passages focus on sexual purity and the thought-life: where lust starts, how to flee it, and how God helps. If you have already failed, remember 1 John 1:9: confession meets a faithful God who forgives and cleanses. For guarding your whole inner life, see also our guard your heart page.
Where lust begins
1. Matthew 5:27-28
"Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus moves the seventh commandment from the act to the heart. A lingering, desiring look is already adultery inside. Purity starts where no one else can see.
2. James 1:14-15
"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death."
James traces lust's life cycle: drawn away, enticed, conceived, sin, death. The easiest place to stop it is at the very first step, before the desire is entertained and grows.
3. 1 John 2:16
"For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world."
John names three pulls of the world: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. None of them come from the Father. Naming what pulls at you is the first step in resisting it.
4. Proverbs 6:25
"Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids."
A father warns his son not to let beauty capture his heart or a flirtatious glance ("her eyelids") lead him astray. The battle is fought first in the imagination.
Flee it and set boundaries
5. 1 Corinthians 6:18
"Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body."
Paul's instruction is not "manage it" but "flee." Sexual sin is uniquely against your own body, which the next verse calls the temple of the Holy Ghost.
6. 2 Timothy 2:22
"Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart."
Fleeing is only half the plan. Paul pairs it with pursuing righteousness, faith, charity, and peace alongside others who call on the Lord. Purity grows in community, not in secret isolation.
7. Job 31:1
"I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?"
Job made a deliberate agreement with his own eyes. A boundary decided ahead of time, before the moment of temptation, is one of the oldest and most practical strategies in Scripture.
8. Romans 13:14
"But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof."
"Make not provision for the flesh" means do not plan for, store up, or leave room for what feeds lust. Today that can mean deleting an app, changing a setting, or avoiding a situation that makes sin easy.
God's help for a pure life
9. Galatians 5:16
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh."
The positive strategy: walk in the Spirit. You overcome a desire less by staring at it than by being filled with something better, day by day.
10. 1 Corinthians 10:13
"There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."
Your temptation is common, not unique, and God is faithful. He promises a way to escape. Look for the door He opens, and walk through it quickly.
11. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5
"For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:"
God's will is stated plainly: your sanctification. To "possess his vessel" means learning to govern your own body with honour rather than with "the lust of concupiscence," an old word for burning, passionate craving.
12. Psalms 119:9
"Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word."
The psalmist's answer for a young man (and anyone) who wants a clean life: take heed according to God's word. Memorized Scripture becomes a guardrail in the moment of temptation.
A short prayer
Lord Jesus, You see my heart and my eyes. Create in me a clean heart. Help me flee what tempts me, make no provision for the flesh, and walk in Your Spirit today. When I fail, thank You that You are faithful to forgive and cleanse. Show me the way of escape, and give me the courage to take it. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about lust?
Jesus taught that lustful looking is adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:27-28). James shows how desire grows into sin (James 1:14-15), and Paul commands believers to flee fornication (1 Corinthians 6:18) and walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).
Is being tempted the same as lusting?
No. Temptation is the pull; lust is welcoming and feeding it. Jesus Himself was tempted yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). James 1:14-15 shows sin follows when desire "hath conceived"—when it is entertained.
How do I fight lust biblically?
Set boundaries before temptation (Job 31:1), remove easy access (Romans 13:14), flee quickly (2 Timothy 2:22), fill your mind with Scripture (Psalm 119:9), and invite trusted believers to walk with you. God provides a way of escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Is attraction a sin?
Noticing that someone is attractive is not the same as lust. Scripture warns against desiring someone in your heart (Matthew 5:28; Proverbs 6:25)—turning a glance into a fantasy. God designed desire for its proper place in marriage (see our love and marriage page).
