The Bible says "to obey is better than sacrifice" (1 Samuel 15:22), and Jesus linked obedience to love: "If ye love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). His commandments "are not grievous" (1 John 5:3), and when human authority and God's command clash, "We ought to obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29).
Obedience can sound like a cold word, but in Scripture it grows out of a relationship: God's people listen to His voice because He loves them and they love Him. People look up obedience verses for a Sunday school lesson, a talk with their kids, a sermon, or because they sense God asking them to do something hard. These twelve King James verses show why obedience matters more than religious activity, how it flows from love (and how Jesus Himself obeyed), and what Scripture says about obeying God and earthly authorities. For a heart that yields to God, see surrender; for children and parents, see parents.
To obey is better than sacrifice
1. 1 Samuel 15:22
"And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams."
King Saul kept the best of the spoil God had told him to destroy, then said it was for a sacrifice. Samuel's answer still stings: partial obedience is disobedience, and no amount of religious activity can replace listening to God.
2. Jeremiah 7:23
"But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and ye shall be my people: and walk ye in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you."
The heart of the covenant in one sentence: I will be your God, and ye shall be my people. Obedience is not a way to earn the relationship; it is how the relationship is lived, and God gives the command so that it may be well unto you.
3. Deuteronomy 11:26-27
"Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse; A blessing, if ye obey the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day:"
Moses set a real choice before Israel: blessing or curse. Later he urged them, "therefore choose life" (Deuteronomy 30:19). Every day brings small choices to obey or not.
4. Isaiah 1:19
"If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:"
Willing and obedient: heart and action together. Obedience done grudgingly misses the point, and good intentions without action do too. The verse just before is the promise "though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow" (Isaiah 1:18). See forgiveness.
Love shows itself in obedience
5. John 14:15
"If ye love me, keep my commandments."
Jesus said this in the upper room the night before the cross. The order matters: love comes first, and keeping His commands follows. The next verse promises the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, who helps us obey (John 14:16).
6. 1 John 5:3
"For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous."
Grievous means burdensome. Jesus said the same: "my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:30). God's commands can be hard to keep, but they are never meant to crush us; they are the shape of a good life.
7. Hebrews 5:8
"Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered;"
Jesus never disobeyed, but He learned obedience by experience, through suffering, most of all in Gethsemane when He prayed, not my will, but thine. He knows what it costs to obey. See surrender.
8. Romans 5:19
"For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous."
Adam's disobedience brought sin to all; Christ's obedience brings righteousness to many. Our standing with God rests on Jesus' perfect obedience, not on ours. That is why Christian obedience is a grateful response, not a nervous attempt to earn His love. See grace.
Obeying God, and the authorities over us
9. Genesis 6:22
"Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did he."
Noah spent years building the ark before a drop of rain fell. Much obedience looks like this: steady, ordinary faithfulness over a long time, with nothing visible to show for it yet.
10. Genesis 22:18
"And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice."
God's promise to Abraham after his hardest test, when God Himself stopped the sacrifice of Isaac (Genesis 22:12). The New Testament sees the promised seed fulfilled in Christ (Galatians 3:16). Abraham's obedience began earlier, when he left home without knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8).
11. Romans 13:1
"Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God."
Paul tells Christians to respect civil authority, pay taxes (Romans 13:7) and pray for leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Christians have always read this together with Acts 5:29: obey the law gladly, except where it would mean disobeying God.
12. Acts 5:29
"Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men."
Peter and the apostles had been ordered to stop preaching about Jesus. They answered respectfully but firmly, kept preaching, and accepted the consequences (Acts 5:40-41). Faithful Christians have pointed to this verse when conscience and law collide, while still honouring the authorities in every other way.
A short prayer
Lord, I want to love You with my obedience, not just my words. Give me a willing heart and ready feet. Where I have obeyed only partly, forgive me and help me listen again. Thank You that Jesus obeyed perfectly in my place, so I can obey You out of gratitude, not fear. Give me wisdom to honour the authorities over me, and courage to obey You first. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about obeying parents?
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right" (Ephesians 6:1), and honouring father and mother is "the first commandment with promise" (Ephesians 6:2). The same passage tells parents, "provoke not your children to wrath" (Ephesians 6:4). Obedience to parents never means accepting abuse; see the note below. See parents and parenting.
Does obedience save us?
No. Scripture says we are saved by grace through faith (see salvation), and our standing rests on Christ's obedience (Romans 5:19 above). Obedience is the fruit of a living faith; James says faith without works is dead. Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant traditions describe the relationship between faith and works differently, but all teach that God's grace comes first and obedience is our response. See faith without works is dead.
What is the difference between obedience and legalism?
Legalism tries to earn God's approval or adds human rules to His commands; Jesus warned, "laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men" (Mark 7:8). Obedience is love's response to a God who has already accepted us in Christ. One is driven by fear and pride, the other by gratitude.
What are good Bible verses about obedience for kids?
Ephesians 6:1 is the classic. Kids also love young Samuel's answer, "Speak; for thy servant heareth" (1 Samuel 3:10), and the story of Noah (Genesis 6:22 above). Jesus Himself, as a boy, went home with His parents "and was subject unto them" (Luke 2:51). See Bible verses for kids and our free Ten Commandments printable.
Obedience in Scripture never requires anyone to accept abuse. If a child is being harmed, in the US call the Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-422-4453. For abuse in a home or relationship, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233. Call 911 in an emergency.
