Bible Verses About Surrender: 12 KJV Scriptures on Not My Will, but Thine

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

In Gethsemane Jesus prayed, "nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done" (Luke 22:42). Mary answered the angel, "be it unto me according to thy word" (Luke 1:38). Scripture calls us to "yield yourselves unto God" (Romans 6:13) and to "Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee" (Psalm 55:22).

Surrender can sound like defeat, but in the Bible it is the opposite: it is trust that God is wiser and kinder than we are. To surrender is to hand over your will, your plans and your worries to the One who loves you, and the old hymn I Surrender All puts it simply. These twelve King James verses show surrender in Jesus, Mary, Samuel and David, what it means to yield yourself to God, and how to place your life in His hands. For hard days, see trusting God; for His sovereignty, see God being in control.

Not my will, but thine

1. Luke 22:42

"Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done."
Luke 22:42 (KJV)

In Gethsemane Jesus asked honestly for the cup to pass, then prayed, not my will, but thine. Surrender is not pretending we have no desires; it is trusting the Father with the answer.

2. Luke 1:38

"And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her."
Luke 1:38 (KJV)

Mary's yes to Gabriel would cost her reputation and comfort. It is a beautiful Advent verse about saying yes to God before you understand everything.

3. 1 Samuel 3:10

"And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth."
1 Samuel 3:10 (KJV)

The boy Samuel answered God's call with, Speak; for thy servant heareth. Surrender begins with listening. Pray these words before you open your Bible each morning.

4. 2 Samuel 15:26

"But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him."
2 Samuel 15:26 (KJV)

Fleeing Jerusalem during Absalom's rebellion, David left the outcome with God: let him do to me as seemeth good unto him. Surrender can be the most honest prayer in the worst week of your life.

Yield yourself to God

5. Romans 6:13

"Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God."
Romans 6:13 (KJV)

Paul says to yield yourselves unto God. Surrender is not only giving up sin; it is offering your whole self, hands, eyes, words and time, as instruments of righteousness.

6. James 4:7

"Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
James 4:7 (KJV)

The order matters: submit to God first, then resist the devil. A yielded heart is not weak; it is where real spiritual strength begins.

7. John 3:30

"He must increase, but I must decrease."
John 3:30 (KJV)

As the crowds moved from him to Jesus, John the Baptist said, He must increase, but I must decrease. Surrender includes letting go of the need for credit.

8. Philippians 3:7-8

"But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ,"
Philippians 3:7-8 (KJV)

Paul counted status and achievements loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ. Surrender is not losing out; it is trading lesser things for the greatest treasure.

Into thine hand

9. Psalms 31:5

"Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth."
Psalms 31:5 (KJV)

Into thine hand I commit my spirit. Jesus prayed these words from the cross (Luke 23:46), and many Christians pray them at bedtime. It is surrender in its simplest form.

10. Psalms 55:22

"Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved."
Psalms 55:22 (KJV)

David wrote this while betrayed by a close friend. Surrender is not only for big decisions; it is also handing God the daily weight you were never meant to carry alone.

11. Jeremiah 18:6

"O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel."
Jeremiah 18:6 (KJV)

God showed Jeremiah a potter reshaping a marred vessel. Surrender is letting God shape and reshape your life, trusting the skill and love of the Potter.

12. Psalms 40:8

"I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart."
Psalms 40:8 (KJV)

Surrender can grow from duty into delight. Hebrews 10:5-7 applies this psalm to Jesus coming into the world, so it fits Christmas too: the Son came gladly to do the Father's will.

A short prayer

Father, I bring You my will, my plans for this year and the burdens I keep picking back up. Not my will, but Yours be done. Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening. Shape me like clay in Your hands, help me decrease so that Jesus can increase, and teach me to delight in doing Your will. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean to surrender to God?

To surrender to God is to stop fighting for control and trust Him with your life: your will, plans, relationships and fears. It is an ongoing posture, not a single moment. Jesus modeled it in Gethsemane (Luke 22:42), and Paul calls it presenting your body as "a living sacrifice" (Romans 12:1).

Does surrender mean giving up or being passive?

No. Biblical surrender is active trust; after praying in Gethsemane, Jesus rose and walked toward the cross with purpose. Surrender also never means accepting abuse as God's will. If you are being harmed at home, in the US call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, or call 911 in an emergency.

Who wrote the hymn I Surrender All?

I Surrender All was written by Judson W. Van DeVenter, with music by Winfield S. Weeden, and published in 1896. It echoes passages like Luke 14:33 and Romans 12:1, where following Jesus means giving Him everything. Many churches sing it at the start of a new year.

How do I surrender my worries to God?

Name them in prayer, one by one, and hand each to God with a verse such as "Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you" (1 Peter 5:7). When a worry returns, surrender it again. See our pages on worrying and stress.
