Bible Verses About God's Plan: 12 KJV Scriptures on His Plan for Your Life

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

God says, "I know the thoughts that I think toward you... thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end" (Jeremiah 29:11). Proverbs says "the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand" (Proverbs 19:21). We are "his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works" (Ephesians 2:10), and "all things work together for good to them that love God" (Romans 8:28).

Does God have a plan for your life? These twelve King James passages answer yes: His purposes stand, He shaped you before you were born, and He works even painful things toward good. This page is about the plan itself, God's purpose and your calling. For the practice of leaning on Him day to day, see trusting God; for seasons when the plan feels slow, see waiting on God.

God's purposes stand

1. Jeremiah 29:11

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."
Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)

Spoken to exiles in Babylon who faced seventy years away from home (Jeremiah 29:10). God's plan for them was peace and a future, though not on their timeline. Christians rightly take comfort in the character of God revealed here.

2. Proverbs 19:21

"There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand."
Proverbs 19:21 (KJV)

We make many plans; the LORD's counsel is the one that stands. Hold your plans with an open hand.

3. Isaiah 46:10

"Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:"
Isaiah 46:10 (KJV)

God declares the end from the beginning. Nothing about your story surprises Him.

4. Psalms 33:11

"The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations."
Psalms 33:11 (KJV)

Human plans shift with the news cycle; His counsel stands forever, to all generations.

Made on purpose

5. Ephesians 2:10

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."
Ephesians 2:10 (KJV)

You are God's workmanship, created for good works He prepared in advance. Purpose is built into salvation's design.

6. Psalms 139:16

"Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them."
Psalms 139:16 (KJV)

Before you lived a single day, God saw you and wrote your days in His book. Your life is not an accident.

7. Jeremiah 1:5

"Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations."
Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)

God knew and set apart Jeremiah before birth for a specific calling. His plans for His people begin before we are aware of them.

8. Psalms 138:8

"The LORD will perfect that which concerneth me: thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever: forsake not the works of thine own hands."
Psalms 138:8 (KJV)

The LORD will perfect, that is finish, what concerns you. He does not abandon the work of His own hands.

Working all things for good

9. Romans 8:28

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
Romans 8:28 (KJV)

Not that all things are good, but that God works all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. Verse 29 defines the good: being conformed to the image of His Son.

10. Proverbs 16:9

"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps."
Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

Make your plans, and expect God to direct your steps. Planning and surrender are not enemies.

11. Genesis 50:20

"But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive."
Genesis 50:20 (KJV)

Joseph's brothers meant evil; God meant it for good. God's plan can include betrayal and prison and still end in rescue.

12. Isaiah 55:8-9

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV)

When the plan makes no sense, remember that His thoughts and ways are higher. Not knowing the why is not the same as not being known.

A short prayer

Father, thank You that my life is not random. You knew me before I was born, and You have prepared good works for me to walk in. Where my plans and Yours differ, let Yours stand. Direct my steps, finish what You started in me, and help me rest in the truth that You are working all things for good. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is God's plan for my life according to the Bible?

Scripture's clearest answers: to know Christ and be conformed to His image (Romans 8:28-29), to do the good works He prepared (Ephesians 2:10), and to love God and your neighbor. Specific decisions are made by walking in His Word, prayer, and wise counsel.

Is Jeremiah 29:11 a promise for me?

It was spoken first to Judah's exiles, but it reveals God's unchanging heart toward His people: peace and hope. Christians can take comfort in His character there while remembering its original context and timing.

Does God still have a plan when bad things happen?

Yes. Joseph said, "God meant it unto good" (Genesis 50:20), and Romans 8:28 promises that God works all things together for good for those who love Him. That does not make evil good; it means evil does not get the last word.

How do I find God's will for my life?

Pray, read Scripture, seek wise counsel, obey what you already know, and take the next faithful step. A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps (Proverbs 16:9).
