Everything Happens for a Reason? 12 KJV Bible Verses on God's Purpose in All Things

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The exact phrase everything happens for a reason is not in the Bible. The closest verse is "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). Scripture teaches that God "worketh all things after the counsel of his own will" (Ephesians 1:11), yet Jesus also warned against blaming people for their suffering (Luke 13:4).

People say everything happens for a reason after a job loss, a breakup, an illness or a near miss, and Christians often wonder whether it is biblical. The honest answer is yes and no. The Bible teaches that God is sovereign and brings good out of evil, but it does not promise that we will always know the reason, and it never calls pain itself good. These twelve King James verses cover God's work in all things, trusting Him when you cannot see, and finding purpose in pain without easy answers. God is at work in all things

1. Ephesians 1:11

"In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will:"
Ephesians 1:11 (KJV)

Paul says God works all things after the counsel of His own will. Nothing is outside His knowledge or His purpose, and in Christ His purpose for His people is an inheritance, not a punishment.

2. Romans 11:36

"For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen."
Romans 11:36 (KJV)

All things are of Him, through Him and to Him. Paul writes this after three chapters of wrestling with hard questions, and he ends not with a full explanation but with worship.

3. Proverbs 16:33

"The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the LORD."
Proverbs 16:33 (KJV)

People in Israel cast lots to make decisions, much like rolling dice. Even what looks random is under God's rule. The verse invites trust, not fortune telling.

4. Matthew 10:29

"Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father."
Matthew 10:29 (KJV)

Not one sparrow falls without the Father. Jesus says this to encourage frightened disciples: you are of more value than many sparrows (Matthew 10:31), so do not fear.

When you cannot see the reason

5. John 13:7

"Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter."
John 13:7 (KJV)

When Jesus washed Peter's feet, Peter did not understand. Jesus said he would know hereafter. Some reasons become clear later in life; some wait for heaven.

6. Deuteronomy 29:29

"The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law."
Deuteronomy 29:29 (KJV)

Secret things belong to God; revealed things belong to us. We may never learn why something happened, but we always know what God has told us to do next.

7. Proverbs 20:24

"Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?"
Proverbs 20:24 (KJV)

Our steps are of the LORD, so how can we fully understand our own way? It is humbling and freeing to admit that we see only a small part of the picture.

8. Ecclesiastes 7:14

"In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him."
Ecclesiastes 7:14 (KJV)

In good days, be joyful; in bad days, consider. God has set the one beside the other. The Preacher does not explain every bad day, but he tells us to think, not to panic.

Purpose in pain, without easy answers

9. Genesis 45:5

"Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life."
Genesis 45:5 (KJV)

Joseph told the brothers who sold him that God had sent him ahead to preserve life. He did not call their sin good; he saw God's purpose working through it. Genesis 50:20 says the same.

10. John 9:3

"Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him."
John 9:3 (KJV)

The disciples assumed a man's blindness was a punishment. Jesus said no: it was an occasion for the works of God to be shown. Suffering is not always a sign of someone's sin.

11. Luke 13:4

"Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?"
Luke 13:4 (KJV)

When a tower fell and killed eighteen people, Jesus said they were not worse sinners than anyone else. Tragedies happen in a broken world. His point was to turn to God, not to blame the victims (Luke 13:5).

12. Philippians 1:12

"But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel;"
Philippians 1:12 (KJV)

Paul wrote from prison that what had happened to him had helped spread the gospel. He found purpose in his chains without pretending they were pleasant.

A short prayer

Father, I do not always understand what is happening or why. Thank You that nothing is outside Your hand and that You can bring good out of what was meant for evil. When I cannot see the reason, help me trust Your heart, do the next right thing and hold on to Jesus. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Bible say everything happens for a reason?

Not in those words. Romans 8:28 promises that all things work together for good for those who love God, and Ephesians 1:11 says God works all things after His will. But Scripture also speaks of "time and chance" (Ecclesiastes 9:11) in a broken world. The Bible's answer is less there is a reason for this and more God is with you in this, and He will bring good from it.

What can I say to someone grieving instead of everything happens for a reason?

Usually, say less. Grieving people need presence more than explanations. Try I am so sorry, I am praying for you or I am here. Romans 12:15 asks us to "weep with them that weep" (Romans 12:15). Save Romans 8:28 for later, when the person is ready to hear it. See grief.

Does God cause bad things to happen?

Christians hold this mystery carefully. Scripture says God is sovereign over all things, and also that "God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man" (James 1:13). Evil is real and wrong, yet God can overrule it for good, as He did with Joseph (Genesis 50:20) and supremely at the cross (Acts 2:23).

What does Romans 8:28 really mean?

Romans 8:28 does not say every event is good. It says God works all things together for good for those who love Him, and the next verse explains the good: to be "conformed to the image of his Son" (Romans 8:29). The promise is about God's final purpose, not a quick happy ending. See trials and Jesus walking on water for storms that end in worship.
