Bible Verses About Vision: 12 KJV Scriptures to Write the Vision and See God's Way

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The best-known vision verse is Habakkuk 2:2: "Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables." Proverbs 29:18 warns, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." God also gives vision by His Spirit: "your young men shall see visions" (Joel 2:28). And faith looks "at the things which are not seen" (2 Corinthians 4:18).

Vision in the Bible means two related things: God's revelation of what He is doing, and the ability to see it and live toward it. Leaders, churches and families often borrow Habakkuk's words when they plan a new year. These twelve King James verses gather God's call to write and follow the vision, the visions and dreams He gave His people, and prayers for eyes to see. For practical goals, see the new year and success; for focus, see distraction.

Write the vision and make it plain

1. Habakkuk 2:2-3

"And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry."
Habakkuk 2:2-3 (KJV)

Habakkuk had complained that God seemed silent. God answered: write it down, make it clear enough to run with, and wait, because it will surely come at the appointed time. It is a verse about patience as much as planning.

2. Proverbs 29:18

"Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he."
Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

Vision here means revelation from God. When His word is missing, people cast off restraint; when it is kept, there is happiness. Leaders do well to anchor their vision in Scripture.

3. Genesis 13:14-15

"And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever."
Genesis 13:14-15 (KJV)

After Lot chose the best-looking land, God told Abram to lift up his eyes and look in every direction. God-given vision often comes after a hard choice to trust Him.

4. Isaiah 54:2

"Enlarge the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth the curtains of thine habitations: spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes;"
Isaiah 54:2 (KJV)

Enlarge the place of thy tent is a call to expect more of God, a popular verse for church plants, growing families and new ventures. Longer cords need stronger stakes, so growth needs deep roots.

Visions and dreams from God

5. Joel 2:28

"And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:"
Joel 2:28 (KJV)

Peter quoted this at Pentecost (Acts 2:17). The Spirit's vision is not only for leaders: sons and daughters, old men and young men all receive it.

6. Acts 16:9

"And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us."
Acts 16:9 (KJV)

Paul's plans had been blocked twice (Acts 16:6-7) before this night vision called him to Macedonia, and the gospel came to Europe. Closed doors can be part of God's direction.

7. Acts 26:19

"Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:"
Acts 26:19 (KJV)

Paul told King Agrippa that he had obeyed the vision of Jesus on the Damascus road. A vision from God calls for obedience, not only admiration.

8. 2 Kings 6:17

"And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."
2 Kings 6:17 (KJV)

Elisha's servant saw an enemy army; Elisha saw God's army all around them. Pray this for anyone who is afraid: Lord, open their eyes. See also mountains.

Eyes to see what God sees

9. 2 Corinthians 4:18

"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."
2 Corinthians 4:18 (KJV)

Faith's vision looks past what is temporary to what is eternal. This verse helps when goals fail or bodies weaken, because what is unseen lasts.

10. Psalms 123:1

"Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens."
Psalms 123:1 (KJV)

Before we look ahead, we look up. This short psalm of ascent is a simple prayer to begin a planning meeting or a journal entry.

11. Ephesians 1:18

"The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,"
Ephesians 1:18 (KJV)

Paul prays for the eyes of the heart to be opened, to see the hope of God's calling. It is a good vision prayer for yourself, your family or your church.

12. Psalms 119:18

"Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law."
Psalms 119:18 (KJV)

Clear vision begins with Scripture. Pray this short line before you read the Bible, asking God to show you wondrous things.

A short prayer

Lord, open my eyes. Show me what You are doing, and help me write it down plainly and wait for it patiently. Keep me from visions that are only my own ambition. Lift my eyes to You first, enlarge my faith, and give me courage to obey whatever You show me. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does Habakkuk 2:2 mean?

God told the prophet to write His answer clearly on tablets so a messenger could read it and run. The message was about God's coming judgment and His faithfulness. Many people apply it to writing down God-given goals, which is fine as long as the vision fits His word and we wait for His timing (Habakkuk 2:3).

What does "Where there is no vision, the people perish" mean?

In Proverbs 29:18, vision means prophetic revelation, God's word. Without it, people cast off restraint and go their own way. The second half gives the remedy: "he that keepeth the law, happy is he." The verse is less about business plans than about living under God's word.

Is a vision board biblical?

The Bible does not mention vision boards. Writing down goals and prayers can be wise (Habakkuk 2:2), but Scripture warns against plans made without God (James 4:13-15). If you make one, include verses, pray over each goal and hold it with open hands: "A man's heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps" (Proverbs 16:9).

Does God still give visions today?

Christians differ on how God speaks today. All agree that any vision or dream must agree with Scripture, God's sure word (2 Peter 1:19). Joel 2:28 promises the Spirit to all God's people, and the most important seeing is with the eyes of the heart (Ephesians 1:18).
