Bible Verses About Mountains: 12 KJV Scriptures From Sinai to the Transfiguration

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

"As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people" (Psalm 125:2). Even if "the mountains shall depart", God says, "my kindness shall not depart from thee" (Isaiah 54:10). And Jesus taught that faith "as a grain of mustard seed" can move a mountain (Matthew 17:20).

Mountains fill the Bible's landscape: Ararat, Moriah, Sinai, Carmel, Zion, the mount of Olives and the mountain where Jesus was transfigured. They stand for God's strength and permanence, for obstacles too big for us, and for places where people met God. Many churches remember the Transfiguration on the last Sunday before Lent, February 7, 2027. These twelve King James verses suit a hiking trip, a mountaintop moment or a valley season. For creation more broadly, see nature; for faith that overcomes, see faith.

The LORD is round about his people

1. Psalms 125:2

"As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever."
Psalms 125:2 (KJV)

Pilgrims going up to Jerusalem sang this psalm as they saw the surrounding hills. Every mountain range can remind you that you are encircled by God.

2. Isaiah 54:10

"For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee."
Isaiah 54:10 (KJV)

Mountains are the most permanent thing we can see, yet God's kindness outlasts them. See God's promises.

3. Psalms 90:2

"Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."
Psalms 90:2 (KJV)

The oldest peaks are young compared with God. When life feels fragile, His eternity steadies us.

4. Psalms 65:6

"Which by his strength setteth fast the mountains; being girded with power:"
Psalms 65:6 (KJV)

The power that raised the Rockies and the Alps holds your life. Standing at the foot of a mountain is a good time to praise the Creator's strength.

Faith that moves mountains

5. Matthew 17:20

"And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you."
Matthew 17:20 (KJV)

The power is not in the size of our faith but in the God it trusts. Mark 11:23 records a similar saying.

6. Zechariah 4:7

"Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it."
Zechariah 4:7 (KJV)

Zerubbabel faced a mountain of opposition while rebuilding the temple. God said it would become a plain, not by might or power but by His Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).

7. Isaiah 40:4

"Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:"
Isaiah 40:4 (KJV)

This Advent prophecy, quoted of John the Baptist (Luke 3:5), pictures God leveling the road for His coming, and Handel set it in Messiah. No obstacle stands before the coming King.

8. Psalms 97:5

"The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth."
Psalms 97:5 (KJV)

What looks immovable to us is like candle wax before God. It is a vivid verse to pray over a problem that feels like a mountain.

Meeting God on the mountain

9. Genesis 22:14

"And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen."
Genesis 22:14 (KJV)

On Mount Moriah Abraham named the place Jehovah-jireh, the LORD will provide. Many trust this name when they cannot see the way ahead.

10. 1 Kings 19:12

"And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice."
1 Kings 19:12 (KJV)

Exhausted and afraid, Elijah stood on Mount Horeb. God was not in the wind, the earthquake or the fire, but in a still small voice. See our page on depression.

11. Luke 6:12

"And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God."
Luke 6:12 (KJV)

Before choosing His twelve apostles, Jesus prayed all night on a mountain. Even a short walk up a hill can become a place to get alone with God.

12. Matthew 17:1-2

"And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light."
Matthew 17:1-2 (KJV)

The disciples glimpsed Jesus' glory before the road to the cross. See the glory of God and Lent.

A short prayer

LORD, You set the mountains in place, and You surround Your people like the hills around Jerusalem. When I face a mountain I cannot move, give me faith to trust You. Meet me on the mountaintops and in the valleys, speak to me in the still small voice, and let me see the glory of Jesus. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about mountains?

Mountains in the Bible show God's strength (Psalm 65:6), His protection (Psalm 125:2) and His unchanging kindness (Isaiah 54:10). They are also places of revelation, such as Sinai, Carmel and the Transfiguration. Jesus used mountains to picture obstacles that faith in God can overcome (Mark 11:23).

What is the Bible verse about lifting my eyes to the hills?

It is Psalm 121:1-2: "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth" (Psalm 121:1-2). The pilgrim looks at the hills, then past them to their Maker. Many read it before a journey; see safe travel.

What mountains are in the Bible?

Important ones include Ararat, where the ark rested (Genesis 8:4); Moriah (Genesis 22:2); Sinai, where the law was given (Exodus 19:20); Carmel, where Elijah prayed (1 Kings 18:42); Zion; the mount of Olives; and the mountain of the Transfiguration (Matthew 17:1). Jesus also taught the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1).

What do mountaintop and valley mean for Christians?

Christians often call moments of closeness to God mountaintop experiences, after scenes like the Transfiguration, and call hard seasons valleys. Peter wanted to stay on the mountain (Matthew 17:4), but Jesus led the disciples back down to serve. God is present in both, for "the LORD is round about his people" (Psalm 125:2).
