Bible Verses for the Depressed: 11 Scriptures When the Heart Is Heavy

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The Psalms give language for a downcast soul: "Why art thou cast down, O my soul?" (Psalm 42:11). God is near the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). Key promises: Isaiah 41:10 (fear not, I am with thee), Matthew 11:28-30 (come unto me), and Lamentations 3:22-23 (mercies new every morning).

The Bible does not ignore dark seasons. Psalmists and apostles wrote about despair, waiting, and returning hope. These King James passages offer spiritual encouragement alongside wise care from others.

When the soul is cast down

1. Psalms 42:11

"Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God."
Psalms 42:11 (KJV)

The psalmist asks his soul why it is cast down, then answers: hope in God. Lament and hope sit side by side.

2. Psalms 34:17-18

"The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit."
Psalms 34:17-18 (KJV)

The LORD hears the righteous who cry, and He is near the brokenhearted. A crushed spirit is not beyond His reach.

3. Psalms 40:1-2

"I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings."
Psalms 40:1-2 (KJV)

David waited patiently; God heard his cry, brought him out of a horrible pit, and set his feet on a rock.

Come to Jesus; cast your care

4. Matthew 11:28-30

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV)

Jesus invites the weary and heavy laden to come to Him for rest. His yoke is easy and His burden light.

5. 1 Peter 5:7

"Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you."
1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

Cast all your care on Him, because He cares for you. The image is throwing a heavy load onto someone stronger.

6. Philippians 4:6-7

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

Bring everything to God in prayer with thanksgiving; His peace will guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

7. Psalms 147:3

"He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds."
Psalms 147:3 (KJV)

He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. Healing is personal and gentle in this picture.

Hope for another morning

8. Lamentations 3:22-23

"It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."
Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)

In a book of grief, hope breaks through: God's mercies are new every morning; great is His faithfulness.

9. Psalms 30:5

"For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning."
Psalms 30:5 (KJV)

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. Night is acknowledged; morning is promised.

10. Isaiah 41:10

"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
Isaiah 41:10 (KJV)

Fear not: God is with you. He will strengthen, help, and uphold with His righteous right hand.

11. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

"Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."
2 Corinthians 1:3-4 (KJV)

God is the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation.

A short prayer

Lord, my soul feels cast down. Be near to my broken heart. Lift up my head, set my feet on a rock, and renew Your mercies to me this morning. Help me cast my cares on You and find rest in Jesus. Amen.
