The Bible is honest about discouragement: "the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way" (Numbers 21:4), and Elijah prayed, "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life" (1 Kings 19:4). God answered with rest, food and His presence. He tells His people, "fear not, neither be discouraged" (Deuteronomy 1:21), and "He giveth power to the faint" (Isaiah 40:29).
Discouragement is that heavy, flat feeling when effort does not seem to pay off: a job search drags on, a ministry seems fruitless, a health or debt plan stalls, or prayers seem unanswered. It is different from clinical depression, though the two can overlap. These twelve King James verses show that Bible heroes felt discouraged too, how God met them, and how to keep going when you want to quit. For deeper sadness, see depression; for perseverance, see never giving up.
When you feel discouraged
1. Numbers 21:4
"And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way."
Israel had to take a long detour around Edom, and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. Discouragement often comes from a road that is longer than we expected, not from one big disaster.
2. 1 Kings 19:4
"But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers."
Right after a great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah ran for his life, sat under a juniper tree and asked to die. Even strong believers can crash after a high point, and God did not scold him. If you feel this way, please see the note at the end of this page.
3. Psalms 143:4
"Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate."
David says his spirit is overwhelmed and his heart desolate. The next verses show what he did next: he remembered the days of old and stretched out his hands to God (Psalm 143:5-6).
4. Psalms 13:1-2
"How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having sorrow in my heart daily? how long shall mine enemy be exalted over me?"
How long appears four times in two verses. Asking God how long is not unbelief; it is prayer. By the end of the psalm David is singing, because he has trusted in God's mercy (Psalm 13:5-6).
How God meets the discouraged
5. 1 Kings 19:7
"And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee."
God's first answer to Elijah was practical. An angel touched him twice and told him to arise and eat, because the journey was too great for him. Sleep, food and rest are part of how God restores a discouraged person.
6. Isaiah 40:29
"He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength."
God gives power to the faint and increases strength for those with no might. The promise is for the tired, not the impressive. The famous verse about mounting up with wings as eagles follows two verses later (Isaiah 40:31).
7. Psalms 3:3
"But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head."
David wrote this while fleeing from his son Absalom (see the title of the psalm). God is the lifter up of his head: when discouragement makes you stare at the ground, God lifts your eyes again.
8. Deuteronomy 1:21
"Behold, the LORD thy God hath set the land before thee: go up and possess it, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath said unto thee; fear not, neither be discouraged."
Moses told Israel to go up and possess the land: fear not, neither be discouraged. Sadly, the spies' bad report discouraged the people instead (Numbers 32:9). Be careful which voices you listen to.
Strengthen your hands and keep going
9. Isaiah 42:4
"He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law."
This prophecy of the Messiah says He shall not fail nor be discouraged. Jesus faced rejection, betrayal and the cross without giving up on His mission, and He understands what you are facing (Hebrews 4:15).
10. Hebrews 12:12
"Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;"
Lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees. The writer is echoing Isaiah 35:3. After pointing readers to Jesus' endurance, he calls them to take heart and keep walking. See running the race.
11. Nehemiah 6:9
"For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands."
Nehemiah's enemies tried to discourage the wall builders by saying their hands would grow weak. His answer was a seven-word prayer: Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. The wall was finished in fifty-two days (Nehemiah 6:15).
12. Hebrews 10:35-36
"Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise."
Cast not away therefore your confidence. Discouragement tempts us to throw away what we started. The writer reminds us that we need patience, and that the promise comes after we have done God's will.
A short prayer
Lord, I feel discouraged, and the road seems longer than I expected. Thank You that You do not scold the weary but give power to the faint. Lift up my head, strengthen my hands, and help me to rest, eat and trust You for the next step. Keep me from casting away my confidence, and let me finish what You have given me to do. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about discouragement?
The Bible treats discouragement as a normal human struggle and gives real hope for it. Moses, Elijah, David and Nehemiah all felt it. God's word to them was "fear not, neither be discouraged" (Deuteronomy 1:21), along with practical care (1 Kings 19:7) and His presence. Jesus Himself "shall not fail nor be discouraged" (Isaiah 42:4), and He helps us carry on.
Who in the Bible was discouraged?
Elijah asked to die under a juniper tree (1 Kings 19:4). Moses told God, "I am not able to bear all this people alone" (Numbers 11:14). Israel was discouraged on the long road (Numbers 21:4), and at Ziklag David was greatly distressed, but "David encouraged himself in the LORD his God" (1 Samuel 30:6).
How do I overcome discouragement as a Christian?
Start with the basics God gave Elijah: rest and food (1 Kings 19:5-7). Then tell God honestly how you feel (Psalm 13:1). Remember what He has done before, talk with a trusted friend, and take one small step of obedience today. Is discouragement the same as depression?
Not exactly. Discouragement usually follows a setback and lifts as circumstances or perspective change. Depression is a medical condition that can last for weeks or months and affect sleep, appetite and energy. Faith and treatment are not enemies. If low feelings last more than two weeks or you feel hopeless, talk to a doctor or counselor. See depression.
If you feel hopeless or have thoughts of harming yourself, please reach out today. In the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency. Talking to a doctor, counselor or pastor is a sign of strength, not weak faith.
