The Bible says only God is perfect: "He is the Rock, his work is perfect" (Deuteronomy 32:4). Jesus said, "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect" (Matthew 5:48), but the word means complete and mature, and believers are made "complete in him" (Colossians 2:10) by grace. Even Paul wrote, "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect" (Philippians 3:12).
Perfection is a hard word. For some it sounds like an impossible command; for others it names a daily struggle with perfectionism, the fear that anything less than flawless is failure. Many people also look these verses up in January while setting goals. The Bible's teaching brings both relief and challenge: God alone is perfect, Christ makes believers complete, and grace frees us to grow without pretending we have arrived. These twelve King James verses explain how. For grace in weakness, see strength; for growing step by step, see growth.
Only God is perfect
1. Deuteronomy 32:4
"He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."
In his final song Moses calls God the Rock whose work is perfect, a God of truth and without iniquity. God never makes mistakes, which is why He can be trusted completely when we cannot trust ourselves.
2. Psalms 18:30
"As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him."
As for God, his way is perfect. David wrote this after years of running from Saul. God's way did not always feel perfect at the time, but looking back, David saw a God who is a buckler, a shield, to all who trust Him.
3. Psalms 19:7
"The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple."
The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul. God's word is the one flawless guide we have; our plans and opinions are not. See truth.
4. Psalms 119:96
"I have seen an end of all perfection: but thy commandment is exceeding broad."
I have seen an end of all perfection. Every human achievement has a limit, and the psalmist has seen it; only God's commandment is exceeding broad. That is freeing: you were never meant to be limitless.
Be ye perfect: complete in Christ
5. Matthew 5:48
"Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect."
Jesus ends His teaching on loving enemies with this command (Matthew 5:43-47). The Greek word translated perfect means complete or mature. In context it means loving like the Father, who sends rain on the just and the unjust, rather than having a flawless record.
6. Colossians 2:10
"And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power:"
Ye are complete in him. In Christ, believers already have everything they need for a right standing with God. You do not have to add anything to make yourself acceptable.
7. Galatians 3:3
"Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?"
Paul asks the Galatians whether, having begun in the Spirit, they are now made perfect by the flesh. We are saved by grace and we grow by grace too, not by grim self-effort. See salvation.
8. Hebrews 13:20-21
"Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen."
This benediction asks the God of peace to make you perfect in every good work, working in you what pleases Him. It is God who does the perfecting, through Jesus Christ.
Grace for perfectionists
9. Philippians 3:12
"Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus."
Paul, near the end of a long ministry, says he has not yet attained and is not already perfect. Even the apostle was still growing. Perfectionism says you must be finished; the gospel says keep following Christ.
10. Ecclesiastes 7:20
"For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not."
There is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not. This is not an excuse for sin, but it is a reality check: everyone fails (see also 1 John 1:8). You are not the only one.
11. Proverbs 24:16
"For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief."
A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again. Righteous people are not those who never fall but those who get back up. Failure is part of the road, not the end of it.
12. Ecclesiastes 11:4
"He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap."
He that observeth the wind shall not sow. Waiting for perfect conditions means never planting. Perfectionism often shows up as procrastination, and this verse gently says start anyway. See never giving up.
A short prayer
Father, You alone are perfect, and Your way is perfect. Thank You that in Christ I am complete and do not have to earn Your love. Free me from the fear of failure and from waiting for perfect conditions. When I fall, help me to rise again, and keep working in me what is pleasing in Your sight, through Jesus Christ. In His name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about perfection?
The Bible teaches that God alone is perfect (Psalm 18:30), that His word is perfect (Psalm 19:7), and that no person is without sin (Ecclesiastes 7:20). Believers are made "complete in him" (Colossians 2:10) and are growing toward maturity. James says, "let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing" (James 1:4).
What does "Be ye therefore perfect" mean in Matthew 5:48?
In context, Jesus is teaching about love for enemies (Matthew 5:43-47). Perfect here means complete or mature: loving like our Father, who "maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good" (Matthew 5:45). It is a call to wholehearted love, not a demand for a flawless life. Luke records the same teaching as "Be ye therefore merciful" (Luke 6:36).
Is perfectionism a sin?
Wanting to do good work is not a sin; Colossians 3:23 tells us to work heartily. But perfectionism can become a burden God never asked us to carry: fear of failure, harsh self-criticism, or trying to earn love. Jesus offers rest to the heavy laden (Matthew 11:28), and God "remembereth that we are dust" (Psalm 103:14). Aim for faithfulness, not flawlessness.
Was Job perfect?
Job 1:1 calls Job "perfect and upright" (Job 1:1), meaning blameless and sincere, not sinless. Later Job admits, "I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes" (Job 42:6). In the Bible, a perfect heart is a whole heart devoted to God, like the one David prayed for Solomon to have (1 Chronicles 29:19).
If perfectionism is tied to constant anxiety, an eating disorder, self-harm or thoughts of suicide, please talk to a doctor or licensed counselor; this is a health matter, not a lack of faith. In the US, call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency.
