Bible Verses About Self-Esteem: 12 KJV Scriptures on Your Worth in Christ

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

Jesus said, "Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:31). God says, "thou wast precious in my sight" (Isaiah 43:4). In Christ you are "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9), "accepted in the beloved" (Ephesians 1:6), and "There is therefore now no condemnation" (Romans 8:1).

Low self-esteem whispers that you are not enough: not smart, attractive, successful, or liked enough. High self-esteem can turn into pride. Scripture offers a better foundation: your worth is set by God, your identity is found in Christ, and your value does not rise and fall with other people's opinions. For being created with care, see fearfully and wonderfully made; for boldness in action, see confidence.

Your worth is set by God

1. Matthew 10:29-31

"Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows."
Matthew 10:29-31 (KJV)

Sparrows were among the cheapest things in the market, yet God notices each one. He has numbered the hairs on your head. Jesus' conclusion is direct: you are of more value than many sparrows.

2. Isaiah 43:4

"Since thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee: therefore will I give men for thee, and people for thy life."
Isaiah 43:4 (KJV)

God tells Israel, thou wast precious in my sight, thou hast been honourable, and I have loved thee. Your value is not something you earn; it is something God declares out of His love.

3. 1 Samuel 16:7

"But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."
1 Samuel 16:7 (KJV)

When Samuel judged by height and looks, God corrected him: the LORD looks on the heart.

4. 1 Corinthians 7:23

"Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men."
1 Corinthians 7:23 (KJV)

Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men. Christ paid for you with His life. That price sets your worth, which means you do not have to be enslaved to people's approval.

Your identity in Christ

5. 1 Peter 2:9

"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:"
1 Peter 2:9 (KJV)

Chosen, royal, holy, His own special people. Peter piles up names of honor for ordinary believers, many of them slaves and outsiders. In Christ your identity is given, not achieved.

6. Ephesians 1:4-6

"According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved."
Ephesians 1:4-6 (KJV)

Chosen before the foundation of the world, adopted as children, accepted in the beloved. Acceptance with God is not based on performance but on His grace and on being in Christ.

7. Galatians 2:20

"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."
Galatians 2:20 (KJV)

Christ liveth in me, the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. The deepest answer to feeling worthless is that Jesus loved you enough to die for you.

8. Colossians 3:3

"For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God."
Colossians 3:3 (KJV)

Your life is hid with Christ in God. Your true self is secure in Him, out of reach of every insult, failure, or social media comparison.

A healthy, humble view of yourself

9. Romans 12:3

"For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith."
Romans 12:3 (KJV)

Not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but soberly. Biblical self-esteem is not inflated self-image. It is honest: seeing yourself as God sees you, with both your gifts and your need for grace.

10. Romans 8:1

"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
Romans 8:1 (KJV)

No condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Many people with low self-esteem live under a voice of constant accusation. In Christ that verdict has been reversed, so self-condemnation does not get the final word.

11. Galatians 1:10

"For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ."
Galatians 1:10 (KJV)

If I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. Paul found freedom in seeking to please God, whose acceptance is already secure.

12. 2 Corinthians 12:9

"And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me."
2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)

My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. They become places where Christ's power rests on you.

A short prayer

Father, when I feel not enough, remind me what You say about me: precious in Your sight, bought with a price, chosen and accepted in Christ. Free me from living for people's approval, and let Your strength show in my weakness. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about self-esteem?

The Bible grounds worth in God, not in self: you are precious to Him (Isaiah 43:4), of more value than many sparrows (Matthew 10:31), chosen in Christ (1 Peter 2:9), and you should think of yourself soberly, neither too high nor too low (Romans 12:3).

What does the Bible say about self-worth?

Your worth was set at the price of Christ's life: "Ye are bought with a price" (1 Corinthians 7:23). Galatians 2:20 says the Son of God "loved me, and gave himself for me." That is the foundation of biblical self-worth.

How is this different from fearfully and wonderfully made?

Our fearfully and wonderfully made page focuses on how God created and formed you (Psalm 139). This page focuses on your worth and identity in Christ and freedom from people-pleasing.
