Bible Verses About Abundant Life: 12 KJV Scriptures on the Life Jesus Came to Give

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Abundant life is not mainly about possessions, because "a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth" (Luke 12:15). It is a life full of God's grace, where "grace did much more abound" (Romans 5:20), flowing out like "rivers of living water" (John 7:38).

The phrase abundant life comes from Jesus' words about the good shepherd in John 10. It is popular for New Year goals, church themes, tattoos and wall art, and it is often misunderstood as a promise of wealth or an easy life. These twelve King James verses show what Jesus actually offered: a full life in Him, overflowing grace, and true contentment that does not depend on circumstances. For the gift of eternal life, see life; for joy, see joy.

Life more abundantly

1. John 10:10

"The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
John 10:10 (KJV)

This verse also appears on our life page, because it is the source of the phrase. Jesus contrasts Himself with a thief who comes to steal, kill and destroy. Whatever drains life away is not from Him; He came to give life to the full.

2. John 10:11

"I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep."
John 10:11 (KJV)

The very next verse explains the cost: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. Abundant life is possible because Jesus laid down His own life on the cross and took it again (John 10:17-18).

3. John 7:38

"He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
John 7:38 (KJV)

On the last day of the Feast of Tabernacles Jesus promised that rivers of living water would flow from those who believe. John explains that He meant the Holy Spirit (John 7:39). Abundant life overflows to others.

4. Psalms 36:8-9

"They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light."
Psalms 36:8-9 (KJV)

God's people are abundantly satisfied with the fatness of His house and drink from the river of His pleasures, for with Him is the fountain of life. Real satisfaction is found in God's presence.

Grace that abounds

5. Romans 5:20

"Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:"
Romans 5:20 (KJV)

Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. No matter how much has gone wrong in your life, God's grace is bigger. Abundant life starts with abundant forgiveness. See mercy.

6. 1 Timothy 1:14

"And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus."
1 Timothy 1:14 (KJV)

Paul, who once persecuted the church, says the grace of the Lord was exceeding abundant toward him, with faith and love. If grace could transform Paul, it can transform anyone.

7. Titus 3:5-6

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;"
Titus 3:5-6 (KJV)

God saved us not by our works but by His mercy, through the renewing of the Holy Ghost, which He shed on us abundantly. The Spirit is not given in small measures. See salvation.

8. Ephesians 1:7-8

"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;"
Ephesians 1:7-8 (KJV)

Redemption and forgiveness come according to the riches of his grace, which God has abounded toward us. The Bible's language for grace is always generous: riches, abundance, overflowing.

What abundant life is and is not

9. Matthew 16:25-26

"For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?"
Matthew 16:25-26 (KJV)

Jesus turns our idea of a full life upside down: whoever tries to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses it for His sake will find it. Gaining the whole world is worthless if you lose your soul.

10. Philippians 4:12

"I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need."
Philippians 4:12 (KJV)

Paul knew both how to abound and how to suffer need, and he had learned contentment in every situation (Philippians 4:11). Abundant life is not having everything; it is having Christ in everything.

11. Psalms 37:16

"A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked."
Psalms 37:16 (KJV)

A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. A simple life lived with God is richer than great wealth without Him. See money.

12. 2 Peter 1:3

"According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:"
2 Peter 1:3 (KJV)

God's divine power has given us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through knowing Him. Everything you need for a full, godly life is already available in Christ.

A short prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for coming to give me life more abundantly, and for laying down Your life as my good shepherd. Fill me with Your Spirit until rivers of living water flow out to others. Teach me to be content whether I have little or much, and to find my fullness in You, not in things. In Your name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does abundant life mean in John 10:10?

In John 10, Jesus calls Himself the good shepherd who leads His sheep in and out to find pasture (John 10:9). Abundant life means life that is full and overflowing, starting now and lasting forever. It includes forgiveness, the Holy Spirit, purpose and eternal life (John 10:28). It does not promise freedom from all trouble; Jesus said, "In the world ye shall have tribulation" (John 16:33).

Is the abundant life about money and prosperity?

No. Jesus warned, "Take heed, and beware of covetousness" (Luke 12:15), and Paul said "godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6). God does provide for His children (Philippians 4:19), but abundant life is measured by grace, love and closeness to God, not by possessions. Be cautious of anyone who promises wealth in exchange for a gift. See money.

How can I live the abundant life?

Stay connected to Jesus like a branch to a vine (John 15:5), feed on God's word daily, and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you (Ephesians 5:18). Practice gratitude and generosity, and serve others with what you have been given (1 Peter 4:10). A good place to start is our free 7-Day New Year Scripture Focus Plan.

What is the difference between abundant life and eternal life?

Eternal life is life with God that never ends: "this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God" (John 17:3). Abundant life describes its quality, full and overflowing. They are the same gift seen from two sides, everlasting in length and abundant in depth, and both begin when we trust Christ (John 5:24).

Abundant life cannot be bought. Be cautious of anyone who promises wealth, healing or a breakthrough in exchange for a gift, and never give money you need for food, housing or debts you owe.
