Bible Verses About Water: 12 KJV Scriptures on Living Water and Thirsty Souls

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

Jesus promised, "whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst" (John 4:14), and "If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink" (John 7:37). Isaiah invites, "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters" (Isaiah 55:1). The Bible ends with "a pure river of water of life" (Revelation 22:1).

Water runs through the Bible, from the Spirit moving over the waters in Genesis to the river of life in Revelation. It means life, cleansing and refreshment, and in a dry land like Israel every well mattered. These twelve King James verses gather Jesus' promise of living water, invitations for thirsty souls, and God's power over the waters. They fit the Baptism of the Lord (Sunday, January 10, 2027) and the Epiphany season. For the sacrament itself, see baptism; for creation, see nature.

Jesus and the living water

1. John 4:14

"But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life."
John 4:14 (KJV)

Jesus offered this to a Samaritan woman at a well at midday, someone others avoided. Living water is His gift of eternal life by the Spirit, and He offered it to an outsider first.

2. John 7:37-38

"In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water."
John 7:37-38 (KJV)

At the Feast of Tabernacles, water was poured out at the temple. On the last day Jesus stood and cried out that He is the source. John 7:39 explains that He spoke of the Spirit.

3. Isaiah 12:3

"Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation."
Isaiah 12:3 (KJV)

Drawing water was daily work. Isaiah turns it into a picture of joy: salvation is a well we return to again and again, not a single drink. See also rejoicing.

4. Revelation 22:1

"And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb."
Revelation 22:1 (KJV)

The Bible ends where it began, with a river and the tree of life (Revelation 22:2). The water flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb, clear as crystal.

Invitations for a thirsty soul

5. Psalms 42:2

"My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God?"
Psalms 42:2 (KJV)

The psalmist feels far from God's house and longs for the living God. Spiritual thirst is honest prayer, not a lack of faith. Read Psalms 42 and 43 together.

6. Isaiah 55:1

"Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price."
Isaiah 55:1 (KJV)

The invitation is for those with no money. God's grace cannot be bought; it is offered freely to anyone thirsty enough to come.

7. Isaiah 44:3

"For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:"
Isaiah 44:3 (KJV)

God links water on dry ground with His Spirit poured out on children and grandchildren. It is a hopeful verse to pray for the next generation.

8. Revelation 21:6

"And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely."
Revelation 21:6 (KJV)

The Alpha and Omega gives the water of life freely. The thirsty do not need to earn it, only to come. It is a comforting verse for a funeral or a weary heart.

God over the waters

9. Genesis 1:2

"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."
Genesis 1:2 (KJV)

Before creation was ordered, the Spirit of God moved over the waters. The same Spirit is at work in the formless, unsettled seasons of our lives.

10. Psalms 77:19

"Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known."
Psalms 77:19 (KJV)

God led Israel through the Red Sea on a path no one could see. When you cannot trace His footsteps, He is still leading you through deep water.

11. Mark 4:39

"And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm."
Mark 4:39 (KJV)

The disciples feared they would drown, and Jesus spoke to the sea: Peace, be still. The One who rules the waves rules every storm. See also God in control.

12. Ezekiel 36:25

"Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you."
Ezekiel 36:25 (KJV)

God promises to wash His people with clean water, from all their filthiness and all their idols, and in the next verse to give them a new heart. See also idols.

A short prayer

Lord Jesus, I am thirsty for You. Give me the living water You promised, and let it spring up in me to everlasting life. Wash me clean, refresh me when I am dry, and be my peace in every storm. Let Your Spirit flow through me to others who are thirsty too. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is living water in the Bible?

Living water means fresh, running water, and Jesus used it for the eternal life He gives through the Holy Spirit (John 4:14; 7:38-39). God called Himself "the fountain of living waters" (Jeremiah 2:13), and Revelation pictures the water of life flowing from His throne.

Why is water so important in the Bible?

In the dry lands of the Bible, water meant survival, so it became a picture of God's life and blessing. It also pictures cleansing (Ezekiel 36:25) and new birth (John 3:5). Key water moments include creation, the flood, the Red Sea, the Jordan, Jesus' baptism and the river of life.

What is the Baptism of the Lord?

The Baptism of the Lord remembers Jesus' baptism by John in the Jordan (Matthew 3:13-17). Many churches mark it on the Sunday after Epiphany, January 10, 2027. Jesus' first sign, turning water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11), is also read in the Epiphany season. See baptism.

What does the Bible say about giving water to others?

Jesus said that whoever gives even "a cup of cold water" (Matthew 10:42) in His name will not lose his reward. In Matthew 25:35, giving drink to the thirsty is serving Christ Himself. Supporting clean water work, or simply offering a drink to a neighbor, can be an act of worship.
