Bible Verses About Stars: 12 KJV Scriptures From Creation to the Star of Bethlehem

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names" (Psalm 147:4). God told Abraham, "Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars" (Genesis 15:5). The wise men said, "we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him" (Matthew 2:2). And Jesus calls Himself "the bright and morning star" (Revelation 22:16).

On a clear winter night, far from city lights, the sky looks crowded with stars. The Bible keeps inviting us to look up. Stars display God's power as Creator, they pictured His promise to Abraham, a star led the wise men to Jesus, and believers are told to shine like lights in a dark world. These twelve King James verses suit a night of stargazing, a Christmas card, or a child's question about the sky. For the wider wonder of creation, see Bible verses about nature.

He calls the stars by name

1. Psalms 147:4

"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names."
Psalms 147:4 (KJV)

Astronomers estimate there are more stars in the universe than grains of sand on Earth, yet God telleth the number of the stars and calls each one by name. The verse just before says He healeth the broken in heart (Psalm 147:3). The God of the galaxies knows you.

2. Isaiah 40:26

"Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth."
Isaiah 40:26 (KJV)

Isaiah points weary exiles to the night sky: God brings out the starry host by number and calls them all by names, and not one faileth. If He keeps every star in place, He has not lost track of you (Isaiah 40:27-29).

3. Genesis 1:16

"And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also."
Genesis 1:16 (KJV)

The creation account mentions the stars almost in passing: he made the stars also. What dazzles us took only a few words in Genesis. Unlike the nations around Israel, the Bible treats the stars as created things, not as gods.

4. Amos 5:8

"Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:"
Amos 5:8 (KJV)

Amos names two star groups, the seven stars (the Pleiades) and Orion. The One who made them also turneth the shadow of death into the morning. Job mentions the same constellations (Job 9:9; 38:31).

Promise stars and the Star of Bethlehem

5. Genesis 15:5

"And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be."
Genesis 15:5 (KJV)

When Abraham was old and childless, God took him outside and told him to count the stars, if thou be able to number them: So shall thy seed be. Abraham believed (Genesis 15:6). Every star became a reminder of a promise that looked impossible.

6. Numbers 24:17

"I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth."
Numbers 24:17 (KJV)

The prophet Balaam saw a distant ruler: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel. Christians have long read this as pointing to the Messiah, the King whose birth a star would later announce.

7. Matthew 2:2

"Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him."
Matthew 2:2 (KJV)

The wise men came to Jerusalem asking, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? Their reason was simple: we have seen his star in the east. They travelled a long way because of a light in the sky, and they came to worship.

8. Matthew 2:9

"When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was."
Matthew 2:9 (KJV)

After meeting Herod, the wise men saw the star again, and it went before them till it came and stood over where the young child was. God used the heavens to guide seekers to His Son, and they rejoiced with exceeding great joy (Matthew 2:10).

Shine as the stars

9. Daniel 12:3

"And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever."
Daniel 12:3 (KJV)

They that turn many to righteousness shall shine as the stars for ever and ever. Fame fades, but those who help others come to God will shine forever. Parents, teachers and Sunday school volunteers can take this verse personally.

10. Philippians 2:15

"That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;"
Philippians 2:15 (KJV)

Paul tells believers to live blameless lives in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world. The darker the sky, the more a single star stands out.

11. 1 Corinthians 15:41

"There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory."
1 Corinthians 15:41 (KJV)

One star differeth from another star in glory. Paul uses the variety of the night sky to explain the resurrection body (1 Corinthians 15:42). God loves variety; no two stars, and no two believers, shine exactly alike.

12. Revelation 22:16

"I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star."
Revelation 22:16 (KJV)

Near the very end of the Bible, Jesus says, I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. The morning star shines brightest just before dawn, so Jesus is the sign that the long night is ending.

A short prayer

Creator of the stars, when I look up at the night sky, remind me how great You are and how near. Thank You for keeping Your promises as You kept them to Abraham. Lead me to Jesus as You led the wise men, and help me shine as a light where I live. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about the stars?

That God made them (Genesis 1:16), numbers and names them (Psalm 147:4), and uses the heavens to declare His glory (Psalm 19:1). Stars also picture God's promise to Abraham (Genesis 15:5) and believers who shine for Him (Daniel 12:3).

What was the Star of Bethlehem?

Matthew says the wise men saw "his star in the east" and that it "went before them" to where the child was (Matthew 2:2, 2:9). Some suggest a planetary conjunction, a comet or a nova, but Scripture does not say. It simply presents the star as God's sign leading seekers to Jesus; read the whole story on our Christmas Day page.

Does the Bible allow astrology?

No. The Bible celebrates the stars as God's handiwork but warns against worshipping them or seeking guidance from them (Deuteronomy 4:19; Isaiah 47:13-14). The wise men followed the star in order to worship Jesus, not the star.

Why is Jesus called the bright and morning star?

In Revelation 22:16 Jesus calls Himself "the bright and morning star." The morning star appears just before sunrise, so the title presents Jesus as the herald of a new day. Peter uses a similar picture: "the day star arise in your hearts" (2 Peter 1:19).
