Bible Verses About Success: 12 KJV Scriptures on Success God's Way

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The Bible's success verse is Joshua 1:8: meditate on God's word and do it, "for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success." David "behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him" (1 Samuel 18:14). The goal is to hear, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21).

Everyone wants to succeed in work, school, family and goals for the new year. Scripture does not despise success, but it redefines it: faithfulness to God first, then wise work, with the results left in His hands. These twelve King James verses gather success God's way, the place of planning and skill, and the kind of success that lasts beyond this life. For effort, see working hard; for goal-setting, see vision and the future.

Success God's way

1. Joshua 1:8

"This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success."
Joshua 1:8 (KJV)

This is the only verse in the KJV that uses the word success. Joshua was about to lead a nation, and God's strategy was simple: keep His word in your mouth and mind day and night, and live it.

2. 1 Kings 2:3

"And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:"
1 Kings 2:3 (KJV)

David's last charge to Solomon echoes Joshua: walk in God's ways and you will prosper. Solomon's later drift (1 Kings 11:4) shows that early success needs lifelong faithfulness.

3. 1 Samuel 18:14

"And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him."
1 Samuel 18:14 (KJV)

Young David succeeded in Saul's army, and the secret was not luck. He acted wisely, and God was with him. Wisdom and God's presence belong together.

4. Genesis 39:2-3

"And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand."
Genesis 39:2-3 (KJV)

Joseph prospered as a slave in Potiphar's house and later in prison. Success in Scripture can grow in hard and unfair places, because it depends on God's presence, not on circumstances.

Plans, skill and wise work

5. Psalms 127:1

"Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain."
Psalms 127:1 (KJV)

Plans, effort and security are empty without God. This is a good verse for the start of a business, a building project or a new year of goals. See also home.

6. Nehemiah 2:20

"Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem."
Nehemiah 2:20 (KJV)

Nehemiah prayed, planned and asked the king for timber, then said this to his critics. Faith and hard work were partners in rebuilding Jerusalem's wall in fifty-two days (Nehemiah 6:15).

7. Ecclesiastes 10:10

"If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct."
Ecclesiastes 10:10 (KJV)

A blunt axe takes more strength. Wisdom is like sharpening: time spent learning, planning and resting makes work more effective. It is a practical verse for students and teams.

8. Proverbs 16:20

"He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he."
Proverbs 16:20 (KJV)

Wise handling and trust in God sit side by side. Do your work skillfully, trust Him for the outcome, and that combination brings good and lasting happiness.

Success that lasts

9. 2 Chronicles 26:5

"And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper."
2 Chronicles 26:5 (KJV)

King Uzziah prospered as long as he sought God. Later his success made him proud (2 Chronicles 26:16). The verse is both a promise and a warning. See seeking the Lord.

10. Matthew 25:21

"His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."
Matthew 25:21 (KJV)

In the parable of the talents, the master praises faithfulness, not size. The servant with five talents and the one with two hear the same words. God measures success by faithful use of what He gave.

11. Jeremiah 9:23-24

"Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD."
Jeremiah 9:23-24 (KJV)

Wisdom, strength and riches are gifts, but they are nothing to boast in. The truest success is to know God, who delights in lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness.

12. 1 Timothy 6:6

"But godliness with contentment is great gain."
1 Timothy 6:6 (KJV)

Paul warns that some treat godliness as a way to get rich. Real gain is godliness with contentment, a success no market can take away. See also money.

A short prayer

Lord, I bring You my work, my studies and my goals for this year. Keep Your word in my mouth and my heart, make me wise and faithful, and be with me as You were with David and Joseph. Guard me from pride, teach me contentment, and let my success be hearing You say, Well done. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about success?

The Bible links success to faithfulness to God, wisdom and hard work, with the results in His hands. Joshua 1:8 ties good success to meditating on and doing God's word. Psalm 127:1 warns that work without God is vain, and Matthew 25:21 shows God values faithfulness over size.

Does God promise wealth and financial success?

Not as a guarantee. God blesses work and generosity (Deuteronomy 8:18), but Scripture also warns against loving money (1 Timothy 6:10) and praises contentment (Philippians 4:11). Joseph prospered, yet he was also a slave and a prisoner. Seek God first and trust Him with the results. See finances.

What is a good Bible verse for success in school or exams?

A favorite is "Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established" (Proverbs 16:3). Ecclesiastes 10:10 reminds students that preparation sharpens the axe, and 1 Samuel 18:14 encourages acting wisely. For study help, see studying, and pair verses with good sleep and steady preparation.

Is it wrong for a Christian to want to be successful?

No. Scripture commends diligent, excellent work (Proverbs 22:29) and records many godly people who prospered. The question is motive and master: success becomes a problem when it replaces God or grows into pride, as it did for Uzziah (2 Chronicles 26:16). Work heartily, as to the Lord (Colossians 3:23).
