Bible Verses About the Power of Prayer: 12 KJV Scriptures on Prayer That Changes Things

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The Bible teaches that prayer is powerful because God hears and acts: "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 5:16). Elijah "prayed earnestly that it might not rain" (James 5:17), and God told Hezekiah, "I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears" (2 Kings 20:5). The power belongs to God, who "is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think" (Ephesians 3:20).

People look up the power of prayer when they need a breakthrough, when they are starting a new prayer habit in January, or when they want to encourage a friend to keep praying. These twelve King James verses show where prayer's power comes from, tell the stories of prayers that changed things, and offer practical help for praying with faith today. The power is never in the words themselves but in the God who hears them. For how to pray, see prayer; for answered prayer, see God answering prayers.

Why prayer is powerful

1. Ephesians 3:20

"Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,"
Ephesians 3:20 (KJV)

Paul ends his prayer for the Ephesians with this praise. The power that answers prayer is the same power that works in believers, and God's ability is greater than our biggest request or our best imagination.

2. Isaiah 59:1

"Behold, the LORD's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:"
Isaiah 59:1 (KJV)

When prayers seem unanswered, it is not because God is weak or deaf. Isaiah goes on to say that sin can separate us from God (Isaiah 59:2), which is why confession and prayer belong together.

3. Psalms 116:1-2

"I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live."
Psalms 116:1-2 (KJV)

The psalmist loves the LORD because He heard and inclined His ear. One answered prayer became a lifelong habit: he will call upon God as long as he lives.

4. Matthew 18:20

"For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them."
Matthew 18:20 (KJV)

Jesus promised His presence where two or three gather in His name. Praying with others, at church, in a small group or at the kitchen table, is a real source of strength. See praying for others.

Prayers that changed things

5. James 5:17-18

"Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit."
James 5:17-18 (KJV)

James chose Elijah because he was ordinary, subject to like passions as we are. His prayers for drought and then for rain are told in 1 Kings 17-18. The point is not Elijah's greatness but God's faithfulness to an earnest prayer.

6. 2 Kings 20:5

"Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD."
2 Kings 20:5 (KJV)

King Hezekiah was sick unto death and turned his face to the wall to pray (2 Kings 20:1-2). God answered through Isaiah and added fifteen years to his life (2 Kings 20:6). God notices tears as well as words.

7. Genesis 25:21

"And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived."
Genesis 25:21 (KJV)

Isaac prayed for his wife Rebekah, who could not have children, and the LORD answered. Comparing Genesis 25:20 with 25:26, they waited about twenty years. A husband praying for his wife is one of the quiet power scenes of Scripture.

8. Daniel 10:12

"Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words."
Daniel 10:12 (KJV)

Daniel prayed and fasted for three full weeks before the angel came (Daniel 10:2-3), yet he was told his words were heard from the first day. A delayed answer is not an unheard prayer. See waiting on God.

Praying with power today

9. Matthew 6:8

"Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him."
Matthew 6:8 (KJV)

Jesus said our Father knows what we need before we ask. We do not pray to inform God or to wear Him down with many words (Matthew 6:7), but to trust Him as children. The Lord's Prayer follows in the next verse.

10. Psalms 18:6

"In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears."
Psalms 18:6 (KJV)

David sang this psalm after God delivered him from Saul. His cry in distress reached God's ears, and the verses that follow picture God moving heaven and earth to rescue him (Psalm 18:7-19).

11. Mark 9:29

"And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting."
Mark 9:29 (KJV)

After the disciples could not help a suffering boy, Jesus told them this kind comes out only through prayer and fasting. Some battles call for persistent, dependent prayer over time. See fasting.

12. Jude 1:20

"But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,"
Jude 1:20 (KJV)

Jude tells believers to build themselves up in their faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. Powerful prayer is not a technique; it grows out of a life rooted in God's word and led by His Spirit. See being prayerful.

A short prayer

Father, thank You that Your hand is not shortened and Your ear is not heavy. Teach me to pray like Elijah, earnestly and with faith, and to trust You when the answer is slow. Hear my prayers for the people I love, and do in my life exceeding abundantly above all that I ask or think. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about the power of prayer?

James 5:16 is the key verse: "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much" (James 5:16). Jesus promised, "all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive" (Matthew 21:22), and John adds that we ask "according to his will" (1 John 5:14). Prayer is powerful because God is.

Why does God not answer some prayers?

Scripture gives several reasons God may say no or not yet: wrong motives (James 4:3), unconfessed sin (Isaiah 59:2), or a better plan we cannot see yet. Paul prayed three times for his thorn to be removed and heard, "My grace is sufficient for thee" (2 Corinthians 12:9). A no from a loving Father is still an answer.

Can prayer heal sickness?

James tells the sick to call for the elders to pray, and says "the prayer of faith shall save the sick" (James 5:15). God still heals, sometimes through doctors and medicine and sometimes in ways we cannot explain. Prayer is never a reason to stop medical care; pray and keep seeing your doctor. See healing.

How can I build a stronger prayer life this year?

Start small and be consistent: a set time, a quiet place (Matthew 6:6) and a written list of people and needs. Write down answers when they come, so you remember God's faithfulness. Many people find a guided journal helps them keep going, such as our 30-Day Prayer Journal. See also the morning.

Prayer and medical care work together. If you or someone you love is seriously ill, please keep following your doctor's advice. If you are in crisis or have thoughts of harming yourself, in the US call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911 in an emergency.
