Bible Verses About Sons: 12 KJV Scriptures for Fathers, Mothers and the Boys They Love

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

The Bible celebrates sons as a gift and a joy: "A wise son maketh a glad father" (Proverbs 10:1), and at John the Baptist's birth the angel promised, "thou shalt have joy and gladness" (Luke 1:14). It also shows fathers passing on faith, as David told Solomon, "know thou the God of thy father" (1 Chronicles 28:9), and praying that sons grow "in favour both with the LORD, and also with men" (1 Samuel 2:26).

Whether you are holding a newborn boy, cheering a son at his game, watching a teenager find his way, or praying for a grown son far from home, the Bible has words for you. Scripture is full of fathers and sons, and mothers and sons: Abraham and Isaac, Jacob and Joseph, David and Solomon, Hannah and Samuel, Elisabeth and John, Paul and his spiritual son Timothy. Some of their stories are joyful and some are heartbreaking, and that honesty is part of their comfort. People look up Bible verses about sons for birth announcements, birthday and graduation cards, baby dedications, Father's Day, or to pray for a son by name. These twelve King James verses speak of sons as a blessing, of fathers and sons in Scripture, and of a son growing into a man of God. For daughters, see daughters; for raising children, see parenting.

A son is a blessing and a joy

1. Luke 1:14

"And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth."
Luke 1:14 (KJV)

Zacharias and Elisabeth were old and had prayed for a child for years. The angel Gabriel promised a son and said thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. That son became John the Baptist. Every son is a reason for joy that spreads beyond his parents to grandparents, friends and church family. It is a lovely verse for a birth announcement or baby dedication.

2. Proverbs 23:15-16

"My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things."
Proverbs 23:15-16 (KJV)

A father speaks to his son: when your heart is wise, my heart shall rejoice. Reins is an old word for the kidneys, the inmost being: his joy goes all the way down. Parents' deepest happiness is not in a son's trophies or salary but in the kind of man he is becoming. Sons need to hear that their character makes their parents proud.

3. Proverbs 10:1

"The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father: but a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother."
Proverbs 10:1 (KJV)

This verse opens the main collection of Solomon's proverbs, and it starts with family. A wise son brings gladness; a foolish one brings heaviness to his mother. It is a gentle reminder for sons of every age that their choices touch the people who love them, and for parents that it is normal for a child's struggles to weigh on the heart.

4. Psalms 72:1

"Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son."
Psalms 72:1 (KJV)

Psalm 72 is titled A Psalm for Solomon, and it ends, "The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended" (Psalm 72:20). It reads like an ageing father's prayer for his son: that God would give him justice and righteousness to rule well and care for the poor. Every parent can pray this over a son: give him Your wisdom and Your righteousness.

Fathers and sons in Scripture

5. Genesis 22:7

"And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"
Genesis 22:7 (KJV)

Isaac, walking up the mountain with his father, asks the question that hangs over the whole story: where is the lamb? Abraham answers in faith, "My son, God will provide himself a lamb" (Genesis 22:8). Christians have long seen in this scene a picture of the Father who did not spare His own Son. See God providing.

6. 1 Chronicles 28:9

"And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever."
1 Chronicles 28:9 (KJV)

Near the end of his life, David charged Solomon in front of the leaders of Israel. His first concern was not the building project but his son's heart: know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind. A perfect heart means a whole, undivided heart. The greatest inheritance a father can pass on is a living faith.

7. Genesis 46:30

"And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die, since I have seen thy face, because thou art yet alive."
Genesis 46:30 (KJV)

Jacob had believed for about twenty-two years that his favourite son Joseph was dead. When they finally met in Egypt, Joseph fell on his neck, and wept on his neck a good while (Genesis 46:29), and Jacob said he could now die in peace. It is one of the Bible's most moving reunions, and a hope for parents separated from a son by distance, conflict or years of silence.

8. 2 Samuel 18:33

"And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!"
2 Samuel 18:33 (KJV)

Absalom had rebelled against his father David and tried to take his throne, yet when news came of Absalom's death, David broke down: O my son Absalom... would God I had died for thee. The Bible does not hide a father's grief over a son who went wrong. If your heart aches over a son, you are not alone, and God understands a Father's sorrow. See the prodigal son.

Growing into a man of God

9. 1 Samuel 2:26

"And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men."
1 Samuel 2:26 (KJV)

Hannah prayed for a son, gave Samuel back to the LORD, and brought him a new little coat every year (1 Samuel 2:19). The boy grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men. Luke uses almost the same words about Jesus as a boy (Luke 2:52). It is a beautiful blessing for a son's birthday: growing in favour with God and people.

10. Luke 1:80

"And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel."
Luke 1:80 (KJV)

John the Baptist grew, and waxed strong in spirit in the quiet years before his public ministry. Growing strong in spirit is not always visible or dramatic. Much of a boy's growth into a man happens in ordinary, hidden years of school, chores, friendships and faith. God is at work in those years too.

11. Philippians 2:22

"But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel."
Philippians 2:22 (KJV)

Timothy was Paul's son in the faith, not by birth. His father was Greek and his faith came from his mother Eunice and grandmother Lois (Acts 16:1; 2 Timothy 1:5). Paul says Timothy served with him as a son with the father. Many young men are shaped by spiritual fathers, mentors, coaches, pastors and grandfathers. If you are one, your influence matters.

12. 2 Chronicles 17:3-4

"And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim; But sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel."
2 Chronicles 17:3-4 (KJV)

King Jehoshaphat walked in the first ways of his father David, following the good example set before him, and sought to the Lord God of his father. Sons often follow the path their fathers walk, for better or worse. The best gift a father can give is an example worth following, and the best choice a son can make is to seek his father's God for himself.

A short prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of my son. You love him even more than I do. Give him a wise heart, a willing mind and a whole-hearted love for You. Let him grow strong in spirit and in favour with You and with people. Protect him from harm and from wrong paths, and if he wanders, bring him home. Make me the kind of parent whose example points him to You, and fill our home with joy and grace. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Bible say about sons?

It calls children, sons and daughters alike, a gift from God: "Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward" (Psalm 127:3). Proverbs speaks often to sons, urging them to listen to their parents and seek wisdom. The Bible's stories of fathers and sons show both deep joy and real heartbreak, and they point to God the Father and His beloved Son. See family.

What is a good Bible verse for a son's birthday or a card?

Popular choices include Luke 1:14 (joy at his birth), 1 Samuel 2:26 or Luke 2:52 (growing in favour with God and people), Proverbs 23:15 ("My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine"), and the blessing "The LORD bless thee, and keep thee" (Numbers 6:24). Add a personal line about what you see God doing in his life. See birthdays.

How should I pray for my son?

Pray for his heart first: David prayed, "give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart" (1 Chronicles 29:19). Pray for wisdom, good friends, protection, purity, a future spouse if he marries, and his calling. Job rose early to offer sacrifices for each of his children (Job 1:5). Praying through one verse a week is a simple habit. See praying for others.

What does the Bible say about a son who has gone astray?

It gives parents hope and permission to grieve. In Jesus' parable of the prodigal son, the father keeps watching the road, and "when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him" (Luke 15:20). Keep praying, keep loving, and keep the door open. A grown son's choices are his own, and God's love for him does not give up. See the prodigal son.
