Bible Verses About Stewardship: 12 KJV Scriptures on Time, Talents, Treasure and Creation

King James Version · Updated October 2026

Quick answer

Biblical stewardship begins with ownership: "The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof" (Psalm 24:1). We are managers, not owners, called to be "good stewards of the manifold grace of God" (1 Peter 4:10), and "unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required" (Luke 12:48).

Many churches focus on stewardship in the fall, when they plan budgets and invite members to pledge for the new year, and many families think about it in January when they set goals and budgets. Stewardship is bigger than money, though. A steward manages what belongs to someone else, and in Scripture that includes our time, gifts, bodies, the earth and the gospel itself. These twelve King James verses cover God's ownership, the parables Jesus told about faithful servants, and what we are entrusted with. For money, debt and budgeting, see finances; for generosity, see giving.

Everything belongs to God

1. Psalms 24:1

"The earth is the LORD's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein."
Psalms 24:1 (KJV)

This verse is the foundation of stewardship. The earth, everything in it and every person on it belong to the LORD. If God owns it all, the question is not only how much of my money I give to God, but how I manage all of His.

2. Haggai 2:8

"The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts."
Haggai 2:8 (KJV)

God said this to people rebuilding the temple with very little. Silver and gold are His, so no budget is too small for Him to use. The next verse promises greater glory for the humble rebuilt house (Haggai 2:9).

3. Psalms 50:12

"If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof."
Psalms 50:12 (KJV)

God does not need anything from us. If He were hungry, He would not tell us, because the world is His. Stewardship is not meeting God's needs; it is honoring Him with what He has already given.

4. Leviticus 25:23

"The land shall not be sold for ever: for the land is mine; for ye are strangers and sojourners with me."
Leviticus 25:23 (KJV)

In Israel land could not be sold for ever, because God said the land was His. His people were strangers and sojourners, tenants on His property. This is why the jubilee returned land to families (Leviticus 25:10).

Faithful servants: the talents, the pounds and the steward

5. Matthew 25:14-15

"For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey."
Matthew 25:14-15 (KJV)

In the parable of the talents, a master entrusts his goods to his servants, each according to his ability. God gives different gifts in different amounts; faithfulness, not quantity, is what He praises (Matthew 25:21, 23).

6. Luke 19:17

"And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities."
Luke 19:17 (KJV)

In the parable of the pounds, the servant who was faithful in a very little was given authority over ten cities. Small things done faithfully matter to God: a quiet hour, a careful budget, a kind word.

7. Luke 12:48

"But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."
Luke 12:48 (KJV)

Much given means much required. Those with more knowledge, opportunity, money or influence carry more responsibility. The verse closes Jesus' teaching on the faithful and wise steward (Luke 12:42). See being faithful.

8. Luke 16:2

"And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward."
Luke 16:2 (KJV)

In this parable a rich man calls his steward to give an account. Jesus uses a dishonest manager to teach wise planning for eternity (Luke 16:8-9), and then says that whoever is faithful in little is faithful also in much (Luke 16:10).

Stewards of grace, gifts, creation and the gospel

9. 1 Peter 4:10

"As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."
1 Peter 4:10 (KJV)

Every believer has received a gift, and gifts are given to serve one another. Your skills, time and abilities are God's grace entrusted to you for others. See helping other people.

10. 1 Corinthians 4:1

"Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God."
1 Corinthians 4:1 (KJV)

Paul calls himself and other ministers stewards of the mysteries of God. The greatest thing we are entrusted with is the gospel. The next verse says stewards must be found faithful (1 Corinthians 4:2).

11. Psalms 8:6

"Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:"
Psalms 8:6 (KJV)

God gave people dominion over the works of His hands. Read with Genesis 2:15, where Adam is placed in the garden to tend and keep it, dominion means caring rule, not careless use. See nature.

12. 2 Timothy 1:14

"That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us."
2 Timothy 1:14 (KJV)

Paul tells Timothy to guard the good thing committed to him, by the Holy Ghost. The faith handed down to us is a treasure to keep and pass on, not to change or lose.

A short prayer

Lord, everything I have is Yours: my time, my money, my gifts, my body and the good news You have trusted to me. Make me a faithful steward in little things and in big things. Help me plan wisely, give gladly, serve others with my gifts and care for the world You made, so that one day I may hear You say, Well done. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What is biblical stewardship?

Stewardship is managing what belongs to God for His purposes. The Bible's starting point is "The earth is the LORD's" (Psalm 24:1), and the standard is faithfulness: "it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful" (1 Corinthians 4:2). It covers money, time, abilities, relationships, the body, creation and the gospel.

What are time, talents and treasure in the Bible?

Time, talents and treasure is a modern church phrase, not a Bible quote, but each part is biblical. Time: "Redeeming the time" (Ephesians 5:16). Talents: the gifts God gives each person (1 Peter 4:10; Romans 12:6). Treasure: "Honour the LORD with thy substance" (Proverbs 3:9). A stewardship Sunday often covers all three.

What does the Bible say about stewardship of the earth?

God placed Adam in the garden "to dress it and to keep it" (Genesis 2:15), and Psalm 24:1 reminds us the earth is His. Caring for land, water and animals is part of faithful dominion: "A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast" (Proverbs 12:10). Worship belongs to the Creator, not to creation (Romans 1:25).

What is a good stewardship verse for church or a pledge card?

Short verses work well: Psalm 24:1, 1 Peter 4:10, Luke 16:10, or David's prayer, "of thine own have we given thee" (1 Chronicles 29:14). For the collection itself, see offering. Give as you are able and never under pressure, because God loves a willing heart (2 Corinthians 9:7).
