SOAP is a simple Bible study method: Scripture (read and copy a passage), Observation (what does it say?), Application (what does it mean for me?), and Prayer (respond to God). Our printable SOAP Bible Study Journal gives you 24 guided days with the full KJV passage printed on each page, a worked example, blank pages, and a prayer list. It's a 32-page PDF in US Letter and A4. Download the free 1-page SOAP sheet or get the full journal for $12.99.
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
Psalm 119:105 (KJV)
What is the SOAP Bible study method?
SOAP turns Bible reading into a 15-minute conversation with God. It works for beginners and for longtime readers who feel stuck.
- S, Scripture. Read the passage slowly, then copy one verse by hand. Writing slows you down and helps you remember.
- O, Observation. What does the text actually say? Who is speaking, to whom, and why? What words repeat?
- A, Application. What does this mean for your life today? Choose one specific, doable step.
- P, Prayer. Turn what you learned into a short prayer.
The goal is not just to read more but to obey and be changed:
"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves."
Example: a SOAP entry on Philippians 4:6-7
- S: "Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7, KJV)
- O: Paul tells believers not to be anxious ("careful") but to pray about everything, with thanksgiving. The promise is God's peace standing guard over heart and mind.
- A: Today, when I start worrying about [situation], I will stop and pray about it specifically, and name one thing I'm thankful for.
- P: "Lord, I give You this worry. Thank You for [blessing]. Guard my heart with Your peace. Amen."
The journal opens with a fully worked example like this one.
