God is the righteous Judge: "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (Genesis 18:25). "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:10). Jesus said, "Judge not, that ye be not judged" (Matthew 7:1), yet also, "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment" (John 7:24).
Judgment is one of the Bible's most serious and most misunderstood themes. Some think judge not means Christians may never call anything wrong; others forget that every person will one day stand before God. These twelve King James passages hold both truths: God is the righteous Judge, all will give account to Him, and believers must not judge others with hypocrisy. For wisdom in telling right from wrong, see discernment; for testing teachers, see false prophets.
God, the righteous Judge
1. Genesis 18:25
"That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"
Abraham pleads for Sodom on the basis of God's character: shall not the Judge of all the earth do right? God's judgment is never careless or unfair.
2. Psalms 9:7-8
"But the LORD shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness."
The LORD sits enthroned for judgment and judges the world in righteousness and uprightness.
3. Acts 17:31
"Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead."
Paul told the Athenians that God has appointed a day to judge the world by Jesus, whom He raised from the dead. The resurrection is God's public assurance that judgment day is real.
4. Ecclesiastes 12:14
"For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil."
God will bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing.
All will give account
5. 2 Corinthians 5:10
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad."
We must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ. Paul writes this to believers, reminding them that how we live matters and will be reviewed by the Lord we love.
6. Hebrews 9:27
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:"
It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.
7. Romans 14:10-12
"But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God."
Why judge your brother? We shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, and every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
8. John 5:24
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."
He that believeth hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation. For those who trust Christ, judgment day holds no fear of condemnation, because Jesus bore it in their place.
Judge not: how to judge others
9. Matthew 7:1-5
"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye."
Judge not is often quoted alone, but Jesus goes on: remove the beam from your own eye first, and then you will see clearly to help your brother. He forbids hypocritical judging, not humble help.
10. John 7:24
"Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment."
Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. Jesus does not ban all judgment; He bans shallow, appearance-based judgment and calls for fair, truthful assessment.
11. Luke 6:37
"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:"
Judge not, condemn not, forgive. A judgmental spirit condemns and keeps score; a Christlike spirit forgives as it has been forgiven.
12. James 4:11-12
"Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?"
Speak not evil one of another; there is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another? Slander and harsh criticism try to take a seat that belongs to God alone.
A short prayer
Righteous Judge, thank You that You always do right. Prepare me to stand before You, trusting Christ, who took my condemnation. Show me the beam in my own eye, keep me from hypocritical judging, and help me speak truth with love. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about judgment?
God is the righteous Judge (Genesis 18:25; Psalm 9:7-8) who will judge the world through Jesus (Acts 17:31). Everyone will give account (Romans 14:12), but believers in Christ will not come into condemnation (John 5:24).
What does judge not mean in Matthew 7:1?
Jesus forbids hypocritical, self-righteous judging. In the same passage He tells us to remove the beam from our own eye so we can help a brother (Matthew 7:5), and in John 7:24 He calls for righteous judgment. Humility, not silence, is the point.
What is the judgment seat of Christ?
Paul says "we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ" (2 Corinthians 5:10). For believers, it is where the Lord reviews and rewards how they have lived, not a threat of losing salvation (John 5:24).
