When you feel lonely, Scripture gives honest words ("I am desolate and afflicted," Psalm 25:16) and a sure promise: "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee" (Hebrews 13:5; Deuteronomy 31:8). Jesus promised not to leave us comfortless (John 14:18) and knew loneliness Himself (John 16:32). "God setteth the solitary in families" (Psalm 68:6), drawing lonely people into community.
Loneliness can hit in a crowded room, after a move or a breakup, after a loss, or late at night. These twelve King James passages are for anyone feeling lonely: they name the ache honestly, promise God's presence, and point toward the community He provides. If you are also carrying grief or deep sadness, our grief and depression pages may help too.
When you feel alone
1. Psalms 25:16
"Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted."
David prays honestly: "I am desolate and afflicted." The Bible gives you words for loneliness; you do not have to pretend before God.
2. Psalms 102:7
"I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top."
The psalm's heading calls it a prayer of the afflicted when he is overwhelmed. He feels like a single sparrow alone on a rooftop—an image anyone awake alone at night understands.
3. 1 Kings 19:10
"And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away."
After a great victory, Elijah ran, collapsed, and told God, "I, even I only, am left." God answered with rest, food, a still small voice, and the news that seven thousand others were still faithful (1 Kings 19:18). Loneliness can make us feel more alone than we are.
4. 2 Timothy 4:16-17
"At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge. Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion."
At his first defense, Paul writes, no one stood with him. "Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me." Even when people walk away, God does not.
God will never leave you
5. Deuteronomy 31:8
"And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed."
Moses spoke this to Joshua as Moses himself was about to leave. The Lord goes before you, will be with you, and will not fail or forsake you.
6. Hebrews 13:5
"Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee."
Quoting God's promise, the writer says "I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." The original Greek stacks negatives for emphasis: never, ever.
7. John 14:18
"I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."
The night before the cross, Jesus promised not to leave His disciples "comfortless"—literally, as orphans. He comes to His people by His Spirit.
8. John 16:32
"Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me."
Jesus knew His friends would scatter and leave Him alone. Yet He said, "I am not alone, because the Father is with me." He understands loneliness from the inside.
God sets the lonely in families
9. Psalms 68:6
"God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land."
God "setteth the solitary in families"—He places lonely people in households and community. A church family is one of the ways He keeps this promise.
10. Psalms 27:10
"When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up."
Even if those closest to us abandon us, "the LORD will take me up." For anyone estranged from family, God's welcome still stands.
11. Genesis 2:18
"And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."
Before sin entered the world, God said it is not good for man to be alone. Loneliness is not a spiritual failure; you were made for connection.
12. Hebrews 10:24-25
"And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching."
Do not give up meeting together. When loneliness tempts us to withdraw, gathering with other believers is part of how God heals it.
A short prayer
Lord, I feel alone right now, and You see it. Thank You for promising never to leave me nor forsake me. Be near to me tonight. Jesus, You know what it is to be left alone; stand with me as You stood with Paul. Set me in a family of Your people, and give me courage to reach out to someone today. In Jesus' name, amen.
