Paul writes, "thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57). God told Judah, "the battle is not yours, but God's" (2 Chronicles 20:15). In Christ "we are more than conquerors through him that loved us" (Romans 8:37), and "this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith" (1 John 5:4).
Biblical victory is not positive thinking; it is what God has already won in Christ and gives to His people. These twelve King James passages show that the battle belongs to the Lord, that believers are more than conquerors, and that sin and death are defeated. For daily endurance, see strength and never give up; this page is about the win itself.
The battle is the LORD's
1. 1 Corinthians 15:57
"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Victory is a gift: God gives it through Jesus. Paul writes this right after celebrating the defeat of death, so it is the biggest victory there is.
2. 2 Chronicles 20:15
"And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's."
Jehoshaphat faced an overwhelming army. God's word to him: do not be afraid; the battle is God's. Judah went out singing praise, and the LORD set ambushes against the enemy (2 Chronicles 20:21-22).
3. 1 Samuel 17:47
"And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands."
David's words before Goliath: the LORD does not save with sword and spear, for the battle is the LORD's. Victory does not depend on your size.
4. Deuteronomy 20:4
"For the LORD your God is he that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you."
God goes with His people to fight for them. You are not facing your battle alone.
More than conquerors
5. Romans 8:37
"Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
In all these things (trouble, persecution, danger; verse 35) we are more than conquerors. Victory in Christ happens in the middle of hardship, not only after it.
6. 1 John 5:4
"For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith."
Faith in Jesus is the victory that overcomes the world. Every believer born of God shares in His win.
7. John 16:33
"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."
Jesus promises tribulation and victory in the same breath: "I have overcome the world." Your peace rests on His win.
8. 2 Corinthians 2:14
"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place."
God always leads us in triumph in Christ, like a victory procession, and spreads the fragrance of knowing Him through us.
Victory over sin and death
9. 1 Corinthians 15:54-55
"So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?"
Death is swallowed up in victory. Paul taunts death itself: where is your sting?
10. Colossians 2:15
"And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it."
At the cross Christ disarmed the spiritual powers and made a public spectacle of them. What looked like defeat was triumph.
11. Revelation 12:11
"And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death."
Believers overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Victory comes through Christ's sacrifice and faithful witness.
12. Psalms 98:1
"O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory."
Sing a new song: God's own right hand has won the victory. Praise is the right response to a battle God has won.
A short prayer
Lord God, thank You for the victory You give through Jesus Christ. When my battle looks too big, remind me that it is Yours. Make me more than a conqueror in the middle of hardship, keep my faith fixed on Christ who has overcome the world, and put a new song in my mouth. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about victory?
Victory belongs to God and is given through Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:57). Believers are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37), overcome the world by faith (1 John 5:4), and share in Christ's triumph over sin and death (1 Corinthians 15:54-55).
What does "the battle is the LORD's" mean?
David said it before facing Goliath (1 Samuel 17:47), and God told Jehoshaphat "the battle is not yours, but God's" (2 Chronicles 20:15). The outcome rests on God's power, not ours, so we can obey without fear.
What does "more than conquerors" mean?
In Romans 8:37 Paul says that in trouble, persecution, and danger, nothing can separate us from Christ's love. We do not merely survive; through Him we come out more than victorious.
Does victory in Christ mean I won't struggle?
No. Jesus promised tribulation and victory together (John 16:33). Victory means struggle does not get the last word.
