When loneliness presses in, Scripture answers with God's nearness: "Whither shall I go from thy spirit?" (Psalm 139:7); "Fear thou not; for I am with thee" (Isaiah 41:10); "I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20). "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me" (Psalm 23:4).
Loneliness is the ache of aloneness (empty rooms, quiet phones, feeling unseen even in a crowd). These twelve King James passages are for that ache: they do not deny it, but they point to the God who stays when people cannot. This page is about loneliness and God's presence; for a closely related set of verses for the feeling of being lonely, see bible verses for being lonely. God is with you when you are alone
1. Psalms 139:7-10
"Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me."
David cannot escape God's Spirit or presence: height, depth, dawn, or sea cannot put him out of reach. Loneliness may feel like you are nowhere; Scripture says God is already there.
2. Isaiah 41:10
"Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness."
Fear not, for I am with thee. The comfort for lonely hearts is not first a plan but a Person: God Himself, strengthening and upholding with His righteous right hand.
3. Matthew 28:20
"Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
Jesus' last promise in Matthew is companionship: I am with you always. Mission and loneliness both meet the same answer: His abiding presence.
4. Psalms 23:4
"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me."
Even in the darkest valley, the Shepherd is not absent. Presence, not the absence of shadows, is what drives out fear.
He will not leave you
5. Genesis 28:15
"And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of."
To Jacob fleeing alone, God said, I am with thee, and will keep thee, and will not leave thee. Loneliness on the road does not cancel covenant care.
6. Exodus 33:14
"And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest."
My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest. Rest for a lonely soul often begins with knowing Whose presence goes with you.
7. Joshua 1:9
"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest."
Be strong and of a good courage; the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest. Courage for lonely seasons is rooted in where God is, not who is in the room.
8. Isaiah 43:2
"When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee."
When you pass through waters and fire, God promises to be with you. Loneliness often arrives in hard passages; He does not wait on the other side.
Held, even when people fail
9. Psalms 73:23-26
"Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."
Nevertheless I am continually with thee. When flesh and heart fail, God is the strength of the heart and portion forever: better company than any crowd.
10. Isaiah 49:15
"Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee."
A nursing mother may forget; God will not. Loneliness can whisper that you are forgotten; this verse answers with a God who cannot forget His own.
11. Psalms 46:1
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Very present: not distant, not delayed, near enough for the lonely hour.
12. Psalms 16:8
"I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved."
I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Practicing His nearness steadies a heart that feels alone.
A short prayer
Father, You see the empty chair and the quiet night. Thank You that I cannot go where Your Spirit is not. Be very present with me in this loneliness; hold me when people cannot, and remind me that You will never leave me. In Jesus' name, amen.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Bible say about loneliness?
Scripture names the ache of feeling alone and answers with God's presence: He is with you (Isaiah 41:10; Matthew 28:20), you cannot flee from Him (Psalm 139:7-10), and He will not forget you (Isaiah 49:15).
Is loneliness a sin?
No. Feeling lonely is a human experience Jesus Himself knew in Gethsemane and on the cross. Sin enters when we respond with bitterness or isolation from God; bringing loneliness to Him in prayer is faith, not failure.
How is this different from depression or grief?
Loneliness is the ache of aloneness. Grief centers on loss; depression on deep sadness and darkness. They can overlap, but this page focuses on God's presence when you feel alone. See also our lonely, grief, and depression pages.
What should I do when I feel lonely?
Pray honestly, remember God is with you, and take one small step toward faithful community when you can. God often meets loneliness both with His presence and with His people.
